Our Recruiting

I have seen several posts that imply that our recruiting is down...and then saying doomsday is coming....

Just did some research (surprise!)...

2016 class: 2 top 30 players in 247 ranking...(Feaster and D Law)
2017: 1 top 30, Higgins
2018: 5 top 30, T Law, XT, KJ Henry, Carman, Kendrick
2019: 1 top 30, Booth
2020: 5 top 30, Bresee, Murphy, DJ, Bowman, Simpson
2021: 1 top 30, Leigh
2022: 4 top 30 (per Tnet Staff report, not sure where they got it), Klubnik, Pride, Campbell, Everette

I would rate Lukus and Sabb higher than a couple of those this year! Seems that when talking top of the class, it goes cyclical, and this year is no different. And the final grades are not in yet on this class...

The players themselves aren’t the issue. They’re all elite prospects that any school would want. The problem is our classes are smaller than UGA, Bama, and OSU. That’s why we have less depth than these three. In addition, Dabo won’t use the portal to address depth, and instead gives scholarships to players that have no business being on this roster.

I agree with you that the talent is there. There seems to be something wrong/missing with the chemistry on the offense. WR going half speed, O Line missing assignments, etc. Even after the few big plays we have seen this year, I don't recall the other receivers getting fired up and helping up the player that made the play. Same on the longer runs. When the team is "clicking" you see O Linemen picking up the RB after a long run and giving him an Attaboy. Sure appears they are just going through the motions, some at full speed, most at half speed.

Los...Winna, Winna.

If you ain't gonna use the portal (I'm cool with that or just using it very lightly), you better start signing more HS kids. The days of worrying about sending a message to a current member on the team that we don't think we "hit" on you should be coming to an end. The same kid, in many instances, most likely sees the writing on the wall and has one foot out the door and into the portal already.

Dabo follows the rules...85 total, 25 per year. The other schools you listed drops the players that don't produce, allowing them to increase the numbers each year, thus keep their depth up. I don't think anyone on here wants Dabo to be like Kirby, Saban, etc., and throw away players. It has worked to Dabo's advantage in the past, and will continue to work.

That our oline is very average and coaching has been for a few years, our QB play sucks and we don't have a playmaker on the field ...there isn't a guy that can house it at any given time ....not at QB, RB or WR....you can nitpick the roster to death and complain about 5'8 white kids on scholarship but that's not why we are not good offensively.

It kind of feels like we’ve just missed on some guys in the 18 and 19 classes. Here is a list of the 5 and 4 star guys that we got.

2018:
Trevor, 5 star, #1 = lived up to the hype
XT, 5 star, #3 = disappointment
KJ Henry, 5 star, #14 = disappointment
Jackson Carman, 5 star, #17 = lived up to the hype
Derion Kendrick, 5 star, #26 = transferred
Justyn Ross, 4 star, #45 = lived up to the hype
Kyler McMichael, 4 star, #56 = transferred
Josh Belk, 4 star, #102 = transferred
Mario Goodrich, 4 star, 114 = average
Justin Mascoll, 4 star, #142 = average
Mike Jones, 4 star, #210 = transferred
Lyn-J Dixon, 4 star, #258 = transferred

2019:
Booth, 5 star, #23 = lived up to the hype
Frank Ladson, 4 star, #39 = disappointment
Joe Ngata, 4 star, #52 = disappointment
Will Putnam, 4 star, #101 = average
Sheridan Jones, 4 star, #130 = average
Tyler Davis, 4 star, #137 = monster
Joseph Charleston, 4 star, #149 = transferred
Bryton Constantine, 4 star, #170 = retired
Taisun Phommachanh, 4 star, #216 = disappointment
Chez Mellusi, 4 star, #241 = transferred
Vonta Bentley, 4 star, #272 = we’ll see next year
Jaelyn Lay, 4 star, #296 = disappointment
Kane Patterson, 4 star, 330 = we’ll see next year

What’s that, 25 players that were 5 and 4 stars…

5 of them lived up to the hype

7 of them transferred
6 of them have been disappointments
4 have been kind of average
2 of them haven’t had a real opportunity yet
1 had to retire due to injuries

That’s 5/25 of the 5 and 4 stars that lived up to their recruiting rankings/finished their careers at Clemson. I’m not great at math, but that’s only a 20% success rate.

Those are your opinions, and they are very wrong! You have to understand, Someone like KJ Henry is not a disappointment...he just had other players to produce more, which reduced his stats. When he is in there, he is good. That applies to most of your other disappointments...Thus, it is my opinion that your assumptions are misguided.

KJ Henry was supposed to be the most dynamic player on the field

Capable of taking over games. He’s had average numbers and it took him what 2 years to see the field in meaningful snaps. Dexter Lawrence, Christian Wilkins, Bryan breese those guys are what home runs in recruiting look like.

Also Ngata and Ladson have to be two of the biggest WR bust we have had at least since Dabo became coach. Ngata should be a TE and Ladson should have played basketball or something because his body is made of paper mache

KJ Henry was the #3 DE and #14 overall recruit lol. He’s in year 4 and is looking like someone who won’t get drafted. I don’t see how this isn’t viewed as a disappointment.

There are 11 players on defense playing. Almost all of them are 4 and 5 star players. There are about 43 players on the team on defense, most of them are 4 stars or better. There will be 4 and 5 star players that will not get on the field regularly. You listed XT as a disappointment. With his health battles, I think that is unfair, especially given his results this year. If we had not of gotten Murphy, for example, KJH would be starting this and last year. EVERY player that you list as a disappointment or transfer, would have been stars on just about any lower tier power 5 school.

To me, someone like Bowman or Belk would be the best example of a disappointment.

To further show your errors, you listed Kendrick as transferred and did not count him as a hit, and you listed Taison as a disappointment, when he is definitely serving a good role as the backup...If Taison is a disappointment, then you would rather not have him on the team right now? And Ngata is the starter now...how can that be a disappointment with as many other choices that we have?

I will try to make this easy to understand…

Look at the top 6 players in the 2018 class

1. Trevor Lawrence - 1st overall pick
2. Justin Fields - 11th overall pick
3. Xavier Thomas -
4. Eyabi Anoma -
5. Micah Parsons - 12th overall pick
6. Patrick Surtain - 9th overall pick

XT isn’t going to be a first round pick even though he was the #3 overall recruit. He has 26 tackles for loss and 12 sacks in his career with his freshman year being his most productive up to this point. Those aren’t #3 overall recruit numbers. Not even close.

KJ Henry is 2 years older than Myles Murphy. Had 2 more years in a college weight room. 2 more years learning this defense. 2 more years adjusting to the size and speed of college football. He was supposed to be what Myles Murphy is. But he’s not. He’s looking like another 5 star recruit that doesn’t pan out. It’s okay to admit that. It’s year 4 already.

DK was a hit. But he didn’t finish his career at Clemson. Taisun is not good. Just watch him when he plays. He’s put plenty on tape. It’s really bad.

Ngata was supposed to be a Justyn Ross, Tee Higgins, Nuk, and Mike Williams. Dabo himself said he’s one of the most talented WRs we’ve ever signed. He’s in his 3rd year and has 675 career yards and 4 TDs. Go look at what all of our other elite WRs did prior to this 3rd year.

I will try to put this in a way that you can understand...

Calling these guys a disappointment, with the criteria you laid out in your original post, is absurd! Any of these guys could have been at least "average". A disappointment would be someone who does not even play. If any of those disappointments had of been 3 star players out of HS, then, you would have listed them as OK or average. Your disappointment rating is an opinion...There are some on here who would rate TL as a disappointment since he only won 1 natty while here! That would be their opinion!

Case in point...most here would call Powell a disappointment (by your standards) going into last year....knowing he would not be drafted, or play in the NFL. How did that turn out? He was drafted in the 5th round and plays for the Chiefs. Are you not glad he was here for that year last year?

Heck, using your criteria, then Carman would be a disappointment...He was a high ranking 5 in HS, But a second round, #46 pick! And then, look at Hyatt...you are saying he was a major disappointment (using your criteria)? See what I am saying now?

And you have danced around TP...are you saying you would rather have a walk on QB than the disappointing TP to back up DJ? TP would be a star on the coots team! That is my point... I give TP a boost simply for still being here...loyalty is a high premium these days!

I am willing to bet that when TP got injured in the spring game...you, just like the rest of us, were very worried about only having DJ for a QB at that time...does not jive with your assessment of him being a disappointment!

Heck, I am disappointed any time a Tiger is not drafted in the first round!!!

And to counter all of your arguments that you have made...look at ETN, Simmons, and such...those type players offset your arguments very neatly!

I think you nailed part of the problem. The hit rate, meaning the number of recruits that produce strong results, is less in recent years than it was in 14, 15,16 and 17. There were also a lot of overachievers in those classes to go with difference makers like DW, Wilkins, TL, Higgins etc. Etienne was a 3 star for example.
