orangecoloredglasses®: "out of curiosity....."

"Out of curiosity, how many 12+ point deficits have we overcome for a victory in BB's tenure?"

*First, I am going to use the cut-off of 10+ points because it comes up even. If I use 12+ points, we've lost more than we've won. So there Bradsters, I give you one.

*Second, looking at only the last 6 years (first), we look at Judge Keller's famous "in the last 6 years, we're 5th in ACC wins" BS. There Bradsters, I give you another.

*Third, in those 6 years there are eight (8) 10+ point deficits overcome, and the same number of 10+ leads lost.

Though to be fair to some degree, six (6) of those leads lost were leads from the First Half of the game.

In contrast, four (4) of the comebacks are from the Second Half of games.

*Fourth, the average NET of the deficits overcome is 124. The average NET of the leads lost is 90.

*Fifth, a full half (4) of the deficits overcome are against teams with NET >150. It doesn't move my needle much when you see we fell behind last year at Home by 11 to PC, but then came back.

*Sixth, three (3) of the leads lost are to teams with NET's higher than 140. Morehead State holds the distinction of having the lowest NET (228) to have come back against Clemson by more than 10 points.

*Seventh, and you do what you want with this: if you take out the NCAA year 2017-2018, that's removing half (4) of the comebacks of more than 10 points, but only removes one (1) of the lost leads of more than 10 points.

Further, it means that 30% of your data points come from 1 year (2017-18).

By contrast, there were no such data points for 2020-2021. No comebacks and also no leads lost.

*Eighth, this also means that the Ledger has been tilted in favor of Lost Leads in the last five (5) years (after the glory season).

In fact, five (5) of the lost leads have occurred in the last two (2) seasons.

*Ninth, there's really no pattern for Home and Away, and a full five (5) of the 16 are off of Neutral courts.

*Tenth, the average deficit for eight comebacks was 12.5 points. The greatest comeback was against TCU (N) in 2019-20, being 15 points over the last 7:39 of the game. Their NET was 93.

*Eleventh, the average lead lost was 15.5 points. The worst lead lost was the abysmal 23 point capitulation to Boston College on our Home Court just last year. Their NET was 141.

I think that about all I can parse for the last 6 years. HTH

Please note that this does not include such sterling team miscues as:

- the 9 point lost lead at Miami in 2021-22, that all occurred in the last 5:02 of game time; or

- the 6 point lost lead at NC State in the last 26 seconds of game time in 2018-19. I can't even describe this. ESPN shows the Win Probability of this at 95%. But having done the research,I can tell you that a 6 point lead with 1 full minute to go is statistically a 99% win ratio.

The actual win ration for 6 point leads at 26 seconds is something like 99.2%

And yet we lost without even going to OT. Yeah, I've had enough of this.

All of these so-called "miscues" are your fault, as a fan. What were you thinking?

And you should support the program more, sheesh.

And...and...Xs and Os!!...Defensive guru...good guy...everyone gets a trophy! "Four more Years!!"

Sigh

That looks like a lot of thought, research and effort. Nice format - good use of punctuation. Nice job.

Whatever choice(s) you make makes you. Choose wisely.

But it does has a certain slant to all of it, don’t you think?***

more thumbs up.

Kind of gave it a Federal Court feel to it if you know what I mean.

(Well, you might not actually know what I mean, but we can discuss it among ourselves and DSP when he returns.) Best.

Impressive research ole mike. I'm not sure I expected that much but kudos for doing it.

To me, next season should be do or die for CBB. No excuses. If PJ comes back then anything less than a Sweet 16 berth is unacceptable. If he doesn't then at least get a rim protector, shot blocker, rebounder type from the portal and make it work.

Mostly I'd say it depends on how much the young players

develop.

JMHO, but, both Godfrey and Wiggins have a chance to be real players in this league. If both takes the same step that Schieffelin took this year, it could be something to see. We're not going to get a All-ACC replacement for Hunter Tyson in the portal, so whatever forward step we make as a Team will be up to them, as no on else has as much untapped upside. Both need to step up their offensive games to be more consistent, but also need to get much better in the D side as well. Wiggins needs to play 2-Guard whenever he's working out, and learn to get somewhere off the dribble and under duress. Hone the shot and he's a Kevin Durant wannabe. Such length! Godfrey needs more consistent Offensive moves with the ball, and a better shot.

Lord help, if Wiggins had been ready to go at the 2 Guard this year, that would have been something. Starting him along with Hall/Tyson/Scheff would have put 4 players at 6'7"+ on the floor, all good shooters for the most part, and some serious upside would have been capable. If we get a good replacement for Tyson in the portal (not likely as Brady Manek is in Australia), this is still a lineup that I want to see.

Beadle is going to be a good player, I just don't know what minutes he's going to get next year. It'll likely be Hunter & Hunter starting in the backcourt, so Beadle will have to be happy for one more year as the super-sub. Nothing wrong with that because playing 3 guards at 2 spots helps keep tempo up all game. I wish he would learn to play better with other players. If the kid learned to create with passes as much as he can with dribbles, he'd be All-ACC at PG. Just likely won't happen - passers like that aren't made generally, they're born.

These three are our upside.

Having Hemenway come back excites me not at all. Not. at. all. It's not that I don't like the kid, he's just a Clemson player from another time - too unathletic to be helpful. And we don't need another hole in the D. I think he'd do better in a quality G5 league, and not taking minutes from guys we need here.

Chase Hunter - learn to shoot dude. Geez. His summer should be 5000 shots a day, and don't leave until you hit 25 around-the-world in a row. But also spend about an hour a day guarding Beadle 1-on-1. Can't do it, and we can't afford the hole in the D he was this year.

Dillon Hunter - Same. Geez. But work with Beadle on getting some more handle if you really want to start. Come ready to shoot, but don't. That's not what we need out of a true PG.

PJ Hall - Work on getting a handle. Also, shoot nothing but three's and left-handed hooks, flips, and short jumpers. Too bad he's not going to play in a system that will help him be a Stretch 4 at the next level. I'm not sure how much more upside he has here, and he's still lacking in some explosiveness.

Scheff - They talk about up-and-coming golfers practicing until they have blisters. In Scheff's case, he needs to wear a few balls out shooting, and then getting toxic at 15' with dribble drives/pull-ups.

All of these guys need a better handle and a better shot.

They also all need to know how to set and move off picks correctly. We don't teach this worth a crap. We should be setting as many picks as passes on every trip down the floor.

Finally, Brownell - you suck. Seriously, I don't hate you, but I hate you. You're not a Coach, and that's all there is to it. You don't have a feel for flow of a game, for offensive rotations, or for how to use your bench. You suck. I'm sick of the surround the campfire and shoot a three Offense. I'm also sick of getting up on teams and then having them reel us back in. You suck. Be the Defensive Coordinator, and let someone else be the HC. ####, just about anyone here on the Board will do.
