The Tigers first road game of the 1979 season was at Virginia Tech on a cool and breezy October day. Right out of the gate, Billy Lott crossed up the Gobbler Defense on a 3rd and 2 and called for the bomb to Perry Tuttle, who beat Tony Blackmon on the play for the 34 YD TD pass.
The Clemson Defense, led by DL Jim Stuckey, were all over VT’s RB Sydney Snell, stopping him for a loss time and time again. On the 1st play of the 2nd QTR, Lott took the snap, rolled out to his left, and hit Tuttle again - this time on an out pattern in the End Zone - and the sophomore hung on for his 2nd TD catch of the day.
Virginia Tech’s offense, stymied on the ground, tried to get something going with the passing game in the 2H, but the Clemson defense hung tough and picked off Virginia Tech’s QB Casey twice.
