I have watched more Olympics than most as I am old.
Folks rise to a new level for the Olympics. Unlike other places, $$ might be less, but no matter.
I have raced against Olympians. I only beat Billy Mills who was then fat and happy, jogging at the back with fans. That guy may be the best example of the Olympic spirit. He was an underdog in the 10K and refused to yield. America has not won a track distance event since then. On this day he was sponsoring all to join in, a great ambassador. I was 41, finished 2nd to my younger friend and great Clemson runner Steve Seaborn.
My favorite Olympian was in a hospital bed training on a suspended bicycle contraption before the games.
The First Woman's Olympic Marathon produced a field of world record setters racing on an impossible hot day in LA for a Marathon. It was understood that Greta would win, so all these world class runners were coached to stay near her. They did. Greta was ~~ I have met her a few times. No one was "Greta". She is a friendly person, which is hard as there is a bronze statue of her in her home town. You can't be Greta.
It was a hot day. At the first water station Joan passed all and took the lead. That broke my heart as I love her. She had made a mistake. The field let her go, knowing she would fade back.
She did not.
Finally Greta moved after 20 miles to reel her in, but Joan was not slowing. It was too late, she was going in. I tear as I remember this.
I have raced Joan a few times but not close enough where she knew I was there. She loves me.
