Clemson first got it October 10th 1974 in Clemson. Took it from Duke. They took it from Purdue who took it from Notre Dame.

Tennessee took it from us the next week. We didn't get it back until the 1988 Citrus Bowl. (87 season) We took it from Joe Pa's Penn State who had just snatched it from Lou Holtz's Notre Dame in their last game of the regular season.

We kept it for 3 games until.... Puntrooski. The puntrooskie game was a title belt game. <img border=

Clemson didn't recover it again (lost a few belt games in the meantime) until we beat Auburn at home in 2011. This time we kept it a little longer and didn't lose it until 6 games later at Georgia Tech. We got it back for one game beating Virginia Tech for our first ACC championship game victory.... but the West Virginia Orange Bowl was a belt game. Yuck. The Belt brings pain with it.

We didn't get it back until our next "national championship" (less legitimate version of a championship) when we took it from Bama in January of 2017. Even then we could only hold on to it for 7 games (longest yet) until we lost it at Syracuse.

It wasn't until beating Ohio State in the 2019 semifinal that we got it back.... only to lose it the next week to the loaded LSU team. That's the last belt game we played in.

Washington currently has it.
