Len J is a major loss...here's why.

1. Experience - only senior in a young running back room. Shipley credited LJ with being the most helpful and influential since he's been on campus. LJ also understands the schemes and has more experience in passing blocking than any other back.
2. Home Run Threat - no other running back, excluding Shipley has it.
3. Depth - What if Shipley goes down? RB's take more punishment than any other skilled position. Shipley was in high school this time last year. He's also had issues putting the ball on the the grass.
4. I called into the Roar this morning and Mickey was harping about "He broke a major Team Rule." "Team Rule." Blah, Blah, Blah...so, what about Fred Davis? He could have killed a woman and he's played in 2 games.
5. What's going on in the running back room? Feaster --- Bowman --- Chez --- LJD???

All 4 of the young men you mentioned felt they deserved more carries than the coaches apparently felt they earned. Feaster got outplayed by Etienne. Feaster was a very good back, but Etienne was generational. Part of the reason Bowman came to Clemson was an assumption that Etienne was going pro after his junior year. That assumption proved incorrect and Bowman got homesick when he ended up 7th string (not sure that his talent merited such a low standing on the depth chart but so be it). Mellusi was ready to go be "The Man" somewhere instead of being one of a stable at Clemson. We will see where it ends up, but early indications are he made a good business decision for himself. Finally, Dixon apparently thought that sticking around for 4 years meant he would be the workhorse this year. The coaches obviously saw something different. From a talent standpoint, Dixon was at worst 2nd on the depth chart. But if he didn't bring the right attitude to the field, then I can see why he was 3rd or lower.

I hated to see each of these young men leave Clemson when they chose to leave, but I don't think it is indicative of anything "going on" in the RB room.

...beyond the fact that Lyn-J got himself outrecruited, anyhow.

Shipley's clearly better. Pace is more of a meat-and-potatoes between-the-tackles guy and he's been limited by what has frankly been dismal interior line play but he doesn't lose yards and start dancing after turning his shoulders the way Lyn-J does, repeatedly - you'd think he'd have learned that drives the coaches stone apesh!t at this point, but he hasn't - and there's also the minor fact he's got Mafah behind him as well. Obviously there was other stuff going on behind the scenes too.

Lyn-J was always a talented back, but that tendency to turn his shoulders and lose chunks behind the LoS was always the big killer for him.

True. But none of your points negate my statement. Len J is a major loss.

Gentlemen, lets not forget that talent is not the only factor. Bowman was a "great" talent coming out of HS but he couldn't block and we certainly need people who can block. He left for UF and is now mired on the depth chart just like at CU. He has 7 carries for 53 yards on the season against inferior schools. Did anyone see him against Bama? The cream will rise so support the wearing the jersey and forget about all the rest. A few tweaks, a few breaks, and this unit will soar. They are close.

he was clearly 2nd string. I don't know what the off the field issues were, but you cant have that from a senior. Wish him well

about the culture. Clemson football will keep moving on and I’m sure the team has already. That’s one thing I applaud about Dabo. He refuses to compromise the culture of the program to fan perception. It’s about integrity, not winning at any cost.

Okay. So, what about Fred Davis? Are you trying to convince me that what LJ did was in somehow worse?

know what’s really going on. And truth be known, that is all that need to know. While we the fans want justification for every little thing that takes place, it’s none of our business.

My guess is that a plan was given to both Dixon and Davis. Davis most likely choose to follow the plan and grow up; Dixon didn’t. Who knows though? I can assure you that Dabo didn’t kick him off the team for no reason though.

Question?
So you think he should have started?

Is the staff in the wrong for naming Shipley the starter?

At this point from 2020 season to today what have you seen from Lynn J that makes you think he’s starter material?

So with all that being said the coaches made the decision to name Shipley the starter. And Lynn J didn’t like it and left. Just like Feaster. Some times the younger guy is better. We can’t baby him and just start him because he’s a senior. I guarantee if he was the best at practice he’d have shown it on game day and he’d be starting.

As far as the RB room I don’t know what you expect. There’s only one ball and not everyone can touch it. Some guys want to be the #1 back and they transfer to try to be that guy. All the players you mentioned were backups and didn’t like that. So far only Chez is having success and that’s behind a much better OL than what we got. If Shipley was at Wis Chez would be backup there too.

Shipley should be the starter. My point is LJ is a major loss. You don't think loosing him is a big deal?

Feaster was not an RB1 but wanted to be the an RB1. Same with LJD. Both good RBs and good guys but neither was elite at the position. Bowman was something of a head case and UF never stopped recruiting him. His heart was in Florida so he headed home. Chez was buried on the depth chart. Has proven to be a super good back and made the right decision to go to Wisconsin as he will get a ton of carries.

BTW LJD will not be missed. He had become a distraction and was not willing to work within the system. I do wish him success as he will be a graduate in December.

There are things that go on "inside" and "outside" of the program that fans don't know about and won't know about. Dabo knows what is happening. Also LJ is a good kid (kids make mistakes), and if he gets his diploma then he is and always will be a Clemson man, but regardless I will root for him to land on his feet and have a good future. People want to dog CJ, but there is a culture to uphold that has gotten us to where we are. A lot of young fans didn't suffer through the West era and maybe are too young to remember the 5-peat, but I've been through it all. I'm older and was at Clemson in 1981 when we won the title but the years after Danny left were terrible from a football perspective. We went to the games to socialize because the football wasn't really worth watching. I supported them then and I support them now.

All these 5 star RBs are coming in thinking they are the best. They are constantly told by their people they are the best. When reality sits in that they may not be, it's hard to accept. Kudos to LJ for sticking around and getting this far. These guys are reaching for their dream and the portal offers them one last chance to realize their dream. I don't fault them.

I never thought we would be a national power (question mark this year), but I'm glad I lived to see it. We are not Alabama yet, but I trust that if there is more to the problems that the team is facing is more than execution and assignments, which I understand, then I for one will trust Dabo will do what needs to be done to fix it after the season.

Let's not bash LJ or the coaching staff. Let's wish him well and pull for our tigers. I hated to hear the news on Davis. That's a huge loss as was LJ for us for depth especially in tough games.

GO TIGERS!!

I'm definitely not bashing anyone for LJ leaving. I do think Dabo should have kept his, "He needs to grow up..." comment, off the podium. No one's perfect, including Dabo, so there's that.

I'm also not in agreeance with so many saying that he will not be missed. That's simply not true, for the reasons I stated.

According to Mickey Pyler on the ROAR. That's all he talked about in the first hour of the show.

Maybe Mickey Plyler will enter the portal. I'm not a fan of Walt because of his arrogance, but at least he has some idea of what he is talking about. Plyler needs to see if there is an opening at the golf channel.

Will be interesting to see where he lands. LSU lost its best tailback to grades recently. Perhaps Lyn will "grow up" in Baton Rouge.

What's funny is no-one is mentioning that Dabo rarely ever calls out a player.. Nobody has ever had a problem with it before but now for some reason he's in the wrong for calling out Dixon? I'm of the mind if Dabo is calling him out theres something more that protecting CJ. Stop defending your pet cat and trust in the most successful coach Clemson has ever had.

it when LJD was on our team? How many more losses?

I think everyone needs to adjust their expectations about kids staying when they are getting up in seniority and not climbing on the depth chart. It's too easy to transfer now...more of that will just happen. It doesn't indicate anything other than kids wanting to play. I'll be that Clemson has more of the "Stay for the fourth year (CJ, ETN, power rangers, )" than a lot of these other programs.
