Johnny Sweeney from USC Upstate has entered the transfer portal.
If we don’t go hard after this guy you would wonder who is running the show.
Nominated for #1 player in college baseball. He hit .351 with 81 rbi and 18 HR.
We have nobody returning in his class

I think he'd be a great pickup; my only wonder is if they do go after him is what do they do with Priest? Priest has the tools to be successful, but he slumped the second half of the season, which soured him on a lot of people. I think you'd have to go one or the other, because having two left-handed primary DH's who both could start is silly. The only way it could work is if one of them platoons at 1B with a RHH (Gaffney potentially), but I don't think anyone is confident in either one of them on defense. Priest only played three games at first last year and Sweeney was strictly a DH (he did play 5 games in the field in 2024), so not a whole lot of experience unless they trust their bats to outweigh the negative defense.

We could use all the bats we can get. Especially after losing the only 2 consistent pieces we had in Cam and Listi. I miss the days of having 6 or 7 guys batting around .300 or better and 4 or 5 guys with a dozen plus homers. The pitching could be in a good shape, but good grief....they'll all be required to throw shutouts with this offense.

Upstate's coach Kane Sweeney is his brother so this is definitely an interesting move. But if he goes to an ACC or SEC school and continues to rake some pro team will take a stab at him. I am not sure if he is in the draft conversation right now, at least not in the early rounds because he doesn't have a position.
