It has to be one or the other

Dec 4, 2022, 2:09 PM

Either Dabo and his staff utterly failed to properly evaluate their brand new 5-star QB - which is a pretty serious coaching oversight

or

Dabo deliberately started an inferior QB, thereby compromising his other players' chances of being successful and winning - an incredibly egregious abdicating of his responsibility to his players and many others.

Which would you consider the more serious offense ?

The team backed DJ to the hilt

Dec 4, 2022, 2:19 PM

Have for 2 years. To a man they say he is their leader. You pull that guy, it better be for good, or else you have a mutiny on your hands. That finally happened last night, and as the sideline reporter duly noted, the team was shocked at how well Cade performed. Now, no turning back. The torch of leadership has been passed and accepted by the team

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Good grief, enough of your schtick dude

Dec 4, 2022, 2:24 PM

Yesterday was blatantly obvious who the better player was/is. And oh fyi, the entire team responded in kind. Decision should have been made weeks if not months ago. We may never know the reason it took so long for the switch to be made, but it wasnt because the players told dabo who to play.

So you weren’t watching the game? Because the sideline announcer commented that the players on the sideline were stunned by Cade’s performance. it was almost as if they didn’t , in fact, expect that result.

Dec 4, 2022, 2:50 PM

I'm with you up to the Syracuse game but neither DJ nor the team looked the same afterward. Hence why Cade was such a spark for everyone. I think DJ was losing some of that team unity he started with. It happens when things start to go awry but I think it is worth acknowledging because ignoring it isn't accepting the reality fo the situation.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: After Syracuse, even though He played awful

Dec 5, 2022, 4:55 AM

DJ should have started, but he also should have been pulled for being ineffective and Cade should have been given a series or two to see if he could ignite the offense. I have been a big supporter of DJ, but there was no sense in trotting DJ back out, especially in that SC game, over and over.

Cade may have played poorly, but at least they would have tried. Dabo has done this repeatedly. It's nothing new. For all his greatness, he is loyal to a fault. Fact.

he is a good kid and a good player. Seems to be a down to earth guy very dedicated to his teammates. He just doesnt have the consistency needed at qb. He make wonderful throws and then he makes some like last night that you can't explain. He is very good or very bad. Very little in between

So much of how DJ plays seems to have to do with his confidence. I don't know what took Dabo so long, but I can understand the thought that all we have to do is get DJ's mind right and everything will be fine.

Re: It has to be one or the other

Dec 4, 2022, 2:33 PM

Could be a little of both. He might have started an inferior quarterback because at a point in time maybe early in the season, DJ may have in their honest opinion been the best choice. Then for whatever reasons DJ’s play declined while at the same time Cade is developing and learning the play book to the point at some time DJ’s decline and Cade’s improvement cross and Cade is at that point the best option. If the staff did not recognize exactly when that happened then they would be starting an inferior QB.

The ND game keeps coming up

Dec 4, 2022, 2:39 PM

Cade was put in for the spark in a horrible position and made a freshman mistake. ND was manhandling us. On the road, hostile crowd, no momentum, so he didn't return. Maybe he learns from it if he plays the rest of the game, maybe his confidence gets shaken.

With DJ, we've certainly seen how one's confidence being shaken can hurt you

Dec 4, 2022, 2:14 PM

Maybe DJ was everything advertised coming out of HS and personal circumstances changed. He certainly wouldn’t be the first. If Dabo is guilty of anything, it’s probably trying to desperately to honor his commitment and try and mentor the guy. I think Dabo sees this as a personal defeat. However if that’s the worst thing he’s done then we’re in solid shape.

Most things can not be reduced to such simply binaries. Lack of critical reasoning skills and a social media ecosphere that thrives on splitting folks into two camps are increasingly getting people to subscribe to such limited viewpoints with fervor.

Your op is a both a loaded question and a fallacy of many questions. Try harder.

ok lets simplify it While all of our problems are not DJ (Though as Dabo refuses to admit many are)but it is impossible to win in this on the big stage in big games with an inferior quality QB period

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: It has to be one or the other

Dec 4, 2022, 2:38 PM

Ok. And? Should I extrapolate that you think Dabo deliberately started the lesser qb for no greater reason than his own personal gratification? Or do you think he has become incompetent? What restitution are you seeking? Are you trying to sound an alarm about the state of our program? If so, to what end? Do you want public reprimands? Do you want our athletic director to sanction Dabo in some way? I see a lot of unfocused anger which isn’t productive or healthy for the program. I would think people genuinely concerned about the welfare of Clemson football would temper their commentary.

I watched the entire team respond yesterday. They have done it on a smaller scale all year. The players knew who the better choice was, and it showed on offense and defense. The energy picked up when Cade came in because they felt they had a chance to win. Ngata caught passes, almost all the bad stuff went away. Blocked kick, players smiling on the sideline, etc. Have not seen anybody having fun all year. Players play harder when they believe they have a good chance to win. No need to get hurt and bust your backside when your other teammates are not carrying part of the load. It also kills the defense when your offense can’t sustain drives. They barely sat down yesterday before having to go back in

Dec 4, 2022, 3:12 PM

if that were the case it would have been voiced. If it had been completely ignored, there would have been major issues on the team

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Dabo meets with the seniors every week

Dec 5, 2022, 3:34 AM

Striper has this right. You can't lose the locker room. Suggesting Dabo had some kind of ulterior motive not to play Cade is ludicrous. Hindsight and all that tells us Cade probably could have been handled better, however. Yanking him after the pick at ND was not a good idea. Cade was about to be sacked and was desperately trying to avoid the tackle. It was not like it was an unforced error. If he had stayed in the game, that may have been the one where we were saying, a star is born.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Dabo meets with the seniors every week

Dec 5, 2022, 5:20 AM

Yes, I thought Dabo should have started Cade in the second half of the ND game. Playing him the one series with the interception is like a bogey on the first hole in golf. Do you quit and walk of the course or do you go to the next tee box and try again. The team Aways had more energy with Cade. Sometimes we are afraid to speak up and say what we really feel. Dabo is the leader of Clemson football, but in this case he had a flawed game plan. We will probably never know the real truth and it’s a team game, but Cade was a winner in HS for a reason and he has played well enough when given the chance to win two games at Clemson so far. I hope he continues to play well.

Was there and thought for sure Cade was coming out to start 2nd half, but alas no. Similarly, the play calling backed up like that should have been zone read, zone read, zone read and punt is necessary.

Viz,

Allow me to make the dichotomy a little more clear for you. Either Dabo did not know how ready this kid was or he did know.

If he did not know that is a gross oversight on his part. If he did know, and did not play the kid more that is a gross dereliction of duty.

I am not buying that the kid suddenly got ready between last week and this week.

If it has to be one or the other, it's the former--- Dabo and his staff "failed to evaluate our QB"
ow whatever. Well, Dabo was in good company because every coach in the nation failed to evaluate this QB since he was the #1 player in the nation. Nick Saban's done that a few times too. So has Ohio State... It's not an unforgivable sin. We are a #### of a team and we showed that last night. Made mistakes. Corrected them last night. Dabo is still the 🐐

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: It has to be one or the other

Dec 4, 2022, 4:43 PM

I choose to think the coaching staff believed DJ, with his flaws, gave us the best chance to win, and they thought we would win with him last week. Turns out they were wrong. What I blame them for is failing to have a back up QB ready to play given DJ's performance the last two years. At times DJ has played well enough to win and the last two weeks, something happened to him so he couldn't complete a 5 yard pass. What happened? I don't know, but it was something between his ears.
