The problem with that is, it alienates 80% of the country and no one will care outside of the south. They winner of that would never qualify for the natty.

There are fans of 4 other major conferences and 4 or 5 mid majors who won’t care about the SEC circle gerk. It would be a bad move just like the current maneuvering and manipulation Stankey and the JOs are doing.

The SEC will lead a movement that destroys the NCAA as we know it. The new organizational entity will only have about 50-60 teams. The playoffs will have 16 teams composed of divisional champs and wild cards. All teams will play within their divisions and inter divisionally. Other former NCAA D1 teams will stay with the reduced and marginal NCAA.

This “sec league” would make tons of money and eventually be adopted by the nfl as a minor league…which would slowly dissolve their relationship to their related university.
The balance of the college football teams would continue to recruit players who choose to earn their degree while playing the sport they love. Some will get drafted after they graduate and many won’t.
Honestly would love to see it happen.

I don't see the sec breaking away, as a whole. With the whole nil debacle, I see several of the universities, who are buying players, forming their own league. This would move in your theoretical direction of minor league NFL.

USuC and Vanderbilt will seek other conferences because the coots will only win in Women's sports and Vandy an occasional good season in baseball.

Since the SEC already pays their players, then they should break off. But they would not be eligible to compete in the NCAA title game, so they can't win the NCAA championship! Works for me!

That will never happen. The other schools presidents will get a vote. If they break off it will only be a SEC title game. Which they already have. That in my opinion is not what they really want. They would not be able to say they are the best conference, without playing the others. Wont happen. Would be a big downfall for them.

while the SEC Super League played for the SEC Super League championship.
With the NFL being so spread out among all of the major population centers across the entire country, and that being the real breadwinner stage for all these players ultimately, I would think there will be plenty of talent to go around still all over the country at the college level for those not wanting to play exclusively in one region.

I know I do enjoy SEC games, but a lot of that is watching our rivals or potential teams we could play in the CFP or a bowl game. If the SEC goes to a super conference and pulls away, with no shot at a national title, or us playing any of them… I don’t think I would have any interest in watching those games because they would literally mean nothing outside of their conference. With no chance to play any of them there just wouldn’t be much interest, by me at least. I would think it’s similar around the country, I think normal interests in those games would shift to teams eligible for the national championship and top 5-10 teams. It might actually be really good for the health of college football if they/you guys, did leave and do their own thing.

No dawg , you are absolutely wrong. 16 teams can’t a national championship make. Especially, with the likes of Vandy , SC, Ark, miss st , and ole miss making up 40% of it.
If a breakaway happens , the SEC will be forced , yes forced, to combine with the blue bloods from all other conferences and ND to achieve their goal. There will be schools left behind but the new breakaway league will be closer to 50-60 than 16.
Nobobody will care about a group of 16 schools playing a game of King of the Mountain amongst themselves, then beating their chest and declaring themselves masters of the universe .
To paraphrase, the SEC is more like a Mike Tyson than a Mohammed Ali.
The ego of you guys is just laughable

Don’t watch the SEcheats now and won’t watch in future. Problem with sec is it’s now legal to pay for play and that will HURT them because many teams have more money and they can’t pick and choose like before and shuffle the funds under the table.

Not only will college ball fans watch, but it likely pulls in NFL fans that have been less inclined to watch college ball
Living in Cali, very few people give a #### about college sports at all. SEC has enough name recognition combined with the curiosity of those already existing NFL fans, I believe it would ultimately be successful.
That’s said, you’re bound to turn people off and lose fans as well. It’ll be interesting to see how it goes down.

I would think the other 4 conferences would not play the SEC in OCC games. This would isolate the SEC from college football. The four remaining conferences would continue to play for the National Championship with the winner of each conference qualifying. Eventually the SEC would have to come back crawling on its knees or become irrelevant to college football.

Interesting post and premise Bulldog and not too far off from the SEC/ESPN/Finebaum mentality. No doubt SEC Football has been the college football flagship due largely to Bama over the past decade. I can see an SEC super league being formed, but I cannot see the SEC going alone without other super school and media buy-in. Ohio State, USC, Clemson, Notre Dame, Penn State, Wisconsin, and some other regional powers will likely be approached to be part of the action.
BECAUSE the SEC, like Trump cannot overcome the media, and Ohio State and the B1G (10) media headquartered in Chicago will do everything they can to delegitimize a purely SEC championship. New York and LA and other large media markets will also have little skin in the game to cover the SEC. It could be ESPN vs. the rest of the market, similar to Fox News vs. the rest of the news market.
Many hardcore college football fans and ESPN could recognize the SEC as the top conference ... while simultaneously most other sports media outlets could tout Ohio State, Clemson, USC, etc. to sow the seeds of doubt and legitimacy. Saban departing Bama or growing senile will also be covered as a transition event which diminishes the SEC. It's unlikely Kirby/UGA or any one program will inherit that SEC mantle.
So a league of 32 to 64 is likely to be evolve over the next decade driven of course by TV money. Anyway, that's how I see it ...

You are on to the answer. I think we'll end up with rwo 32 team conferences. A Southern conference anchored by the SEC, and a Northern conference anchored by the BIG10. The best of the ACC,PAC12, Ana BIG12 will fill the 32 team complement. Each conference can be divided into 4 divisions. 64 total teams and 8 divisions allow allow for fair and competitive playoffs in almost every sport.

Oh, whither away and die for sure. I mean, everyone knows that the SEC are already the super-extra-supreme-mega overlords of all that is college athletics, so what’s the point in trying anymore? I’m actually far more concerned that they (the SEC) may next target and destroy professional leagues too. SEC >>> NFL, MLB, NBA, et. al.

It could kill the SEC. Who would want to watch it outside of the areas where those schools exist? What would it prove--that they can beat each other while leaving out some of the best teams that reside in a much larger part of the country?

The NCAA would ban these schools from competing in all other sports. Bama would win every year and then a few schools would want to come back to the NCAA. Money would drop because outside the SEC geography no one would really care. You'd likely have Title IX concerns as well as athletes in other sports transfer out because the football only focus would mean reduced spending in other areas. It would be like the NASCAR of today, kinda past its prime with diminished interest on a national level.

The only way this will happen is if schools like Ohio State, Michigan, Clemson, Penn State, Miami, ND, USC & others joined. They can’t have a super league if 4 or 5 of the best programs are not in the league. I think the SEC likely is going to be trying to entice these other programs if that is their plan.

Miss winning another national championship for the league is a feel good story, but this only emboldens they mindset of the league.

Seeing Alabama okay the flavor of the week in SEC will get super redundant to consumers…Not including the millions they would miss out on by simply isolating the viewers. Why settle on the tuna when you can have a marlin….it would be irreversible suicide for the conference.

SEC breaking away and having their own conference would be dumb.
If they are smart they will eventually come to the conclusion that a single league national model much like the NFL will generate the most money.
Smaller piece of bigger pie is the way to go.

Satan thinking he is God. I hope when the SEC makes this leap, they take ESecPN with them and they forget the life preservers.

If the SEC does expand to 20 or 28 teams and leaves the rest of college football, no one outside of the SEC will GAS. I certainly would not care or pay attention to what goes on in that league. To tell the truth, I do not GAS now about the SEC so nothing much will change for me.
