I love lottery logic
Dec 17, 2013, 3:03 PM

"Your odds are not going to improve that much if you buy 1 ticket or 1,000,'' says Howard, author of Lottery Master Guide. "I also think you should pick your own numbers rather than let a (point of sale) computer do it."
The first advice. . . ok sure that is true, but it doesn't matter if you pick the numbers or if a computer picks the numbers.

There is a bias of individuals to pick numbers under 31...

...and numbers 1-12, because so many people pick birth months and years. The point of sale pick eliminates that bias.

There is no logic to playing the lottery.

For the ones with a head on their shoulders, it's just a slightly amusing way to blow a couple of bucks.
For people who are stupid, it's a way to spectacularly fail at managing money.

with a huge jackpot on the line like this. However, if you are buying it for every drawing or buying scratch-offs on a daily basis, yea you have a problem

sometimes I even forget to check the numbers and I'll find a ticket and be like . . . oh yeah I forgot I bought this.
I think the odds of me buying lottery tickets increase as my job satisfaction decreases.

hit. granted, you, your kids and your grandkids might be long gone at that time, but it WILL hit.
but if you play random numbers, there's no guarantee there.
and yes, I know I'm talking about astronomical odds. Zoom out for a sec.

If you buy 1,000 lottery tickets every day

For 14 years, there would be a 2% chance that you would win it in those 14 years. Of course, you will have spent several million dollars on tickets at that point.

I like to have at least a 50/50 shot at it.

To have a 50/50 shot at winning this jackpot, you would have to buy over 200 million tickets.
