I hate the 50/50 ball...I'm sick of hearing about it.

Why does it seem like the "Clemson offense" lives and dies with the 50/50 ball?
It's all we hear from Coach Dabo to the players. 50/50 ball this....50/50 ball that...
Here's a novel idea...have an offensive scheme where guys get loose and throw the dang ball to someone open with a better than 50/50 chance.

Go back to the 70s and by the way we beat Bama 44-16 with quite a few of those 50/50 balls

That was when we had Tee Higgins at 6'4", Justyn Ross at 6'4", Diondre Overton at 6'4". IMO when we've had WRs, and TEs that were 6'3", 6'4", and 6'5" that could run and have really good hands, our Clemson Tigers were really hard to beat, and it never hurts to have a QB like DW4 and TL16 throwing the ball to those types of Receivers and Tight Ends!!! Also, that was the 2018 season that we beat Bama 44-16...

Height seems to help but is not the most important factor with a 50/50 ball. My evidence is Nuk and Sammy were both 6-1ish and I would not bet against either of them coming up with a contested ball. Tee and Justin also had the hands, body control, athleticism and innate skill to win the battle.

I agree with your larger point, need to focus on more easy layup designed plays similar to ole miss does, but think Dabo may just mean we need to get back to actually making those 50/50 when they are presented which we havent in 2 or 3 years due to lack of talent and injuries.

White boys can’t jump isn’t a thing anymore. I was the one that could back in the day. The gap has closed. Also gone are the days of no white boys running 4.3 40 yard dash. I ran a 4.4 in the 80’s without pads and a 4.5 with pads. It was rare in those days. Today it’s just normal.

especially if you are ahead of the sticks. Unfortunately, our guys are either too small, or lack the ball skills to make this an effective option., Help is on the way with Wesco, who is elite at tracking down the ball, and TJ Moore, who catches everything. '
And to your point, This is not a staple of Riley's offense, he prefers smaller, quicker receivers that can get separation, and we now have that in Wesco, Williams, and a healthy Cole Turner. Cade also needs to get on the same page as the receivers with the back shoulder throws, he has the arm talent.

Because that isn’t reality. Most deep shots are in fact 50/50 balls. It’s up to the receiver to make them 80/20. We haven’t had those guys lately. Every offense with a vertical attack throws 50/50 balls. Maybe stop watching football?!

Yep, 50/50 balls were easier with receivers that could/would go up and get them. In recent years it was 50/50 that we had a QB and receiver that could throw and catch a ball period …

Our current coaches aren’t smart enough to come up with a good enough scheme. We have to rely on big plays because the offense is too inconsistent and the playcalling is too inconsistent to put together long drives.

Theoretically

Most passes are to an open receiver and should be 80/20 plays. This should be 80% of the time. But there are times when you just have to put the ball in play and hope your receiver can make it happen. That should be about 20% of the time. When a D plays everything perfectly and you still complete the pass because the receiver is that good it is demoralizing for the D. That is why the focus is on 50/50 balls. It kills the other team’s morale. Everyone knows you have to hit open receivers first and foremost, but there are times when you need to hit 4th and 16 - open or not!
All that said, if the QB is late on the throws or inaccurate, more passes will be 50/50 balls. That is not what you want. I really hope that is not the case now or it will be a long, disappointing year.

There is a reason that Trevor, Sammy, Nuk, Justyn and Tee are in the NFL and that reason is talent. If it was easy for receivers to get open and for quarterbacks to throw perfect passes, every game would be 60-58 or something like that. Come on.

50/50 doesn't refer to the odds of the play working. Coaches are just referring to the fact that both players have a chance to make the play. That's why with our great receivers it seemed like it was a 90/10 play. It was because our boys were just better. That's what Dabo wants. He thinks our guys should be doing better and making those plays. These plays are essential to beating 1 on 1 coverage deep at all levels. Making those plays keeps defenses in a 2 or 3 deep zone where you can run the ball or then run your pass plays against the zones where they can find the holes to "get loose".

Relied way too much on his arm strength imo and not much on scheming players open imo (as an armchair QB). I think that really hurt us his SO/JR seasons.

Man, I’m critical of some of the things going on as well but goodness back away from the ledge. It’s not that bad. Does Dabo need to change some things? I think so, BUT he sees things we do not so ultimately it’s his decision. The results will speak for themselves. This is a difficult time in CFB and I would rather us be above board until some of this mess sorts itself out.

Look at how WRs are used in the NFL today. The majority of the top guys are under 6'1" and have a few traits in common.
Justin Jefferson 6'1" 203 LBS Tyreek Hill 5'10" 185 LBS CeeDee Lamb 6'2" 201 LBS Ja'Marr Chase 6'0" 201 LBS Amon-Ra St. Brown 6'0" 203 LBS Davante Adams 6'1" 216 LBS Brandon Aiyuk 6'0" 201 LBS Stefon Diggs 6'1" 216 LBS Garrett Wilson 6'0" 192 LBS
Quick in space, great route runners, and can stretch the field if needed. The NFL has been trending this way for awhile now. Bama was one of the first programs to jump on this trend with Jeudy, Ruggs, Smith and Waddle. There will still be some taller WRs who are freak athletes that can make it work (Marvin Harrison Jr. comes to mind), but it's clear where the game is going.
