Ray Tanner has always wanted to be an AD

He got passed over last time
The only downside to that would be Holbrook would likely get the job. He's been a bigger factor than Tanner in their run.

Hyman's being run-off because of the collapse against Arizona at the CWS - is being blamed.
Also, Tanner has no shot at the AD job because of the CWS "debacle."

not to be an a@@ but that is literally the dumbest thing i have ever heard. I know gamecocks aren't always the brightest, but they aren't going to run off an athletics director who oversaw 2 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP baseball teams when their school had never won a single NC in baseball before.
And how exactly was it a debacle? Arizona was just better.
I think Hyman realizes that things can not possibly get any better at South Carolina, and now is a good time to leave. He has overseen the greatest era ever in their sports history.

Although pure speculation, you gotta wonder about this move

Hyman turned down his alma mater, unc, and more money to stay at usuck. And there's no doubt that while Hyman was in cola, usuck had unprecedented (for them) success in both football and baseball and greatly improved their facilities situation........its also true, that during Hyman's tenure, usuck got put on NCAA probation not once, but twice.
He may have kids in Texas and all that.....but there's absolutely no question the unc job is one of the best in America and he turned down an opportunity to lead his alma mater out from under its darkest cloud since the point shaving scandals of the late50's/early60's which got Frank McGuire run out of chapelhole. Hyman stated, to the delight of drooling usuck fans, that his "job" wasn't finished in cootland--though a few scant months after the NCAA's latest punishment of usuck, all the work he spoke of last year is suddenly completed??
Can it be he doesn't want be involved in usuck's next NCAA issues?? Is it possible he's aware of goings on at usuck that may bring "the boys from Indy" BACK to Olympia???.....and its not as if NCAA investigators aren't familiar with the campus.
Regardless, on the surface, the move, and especially the timing, invites a lot of questions.

for pete's sake, it was all over the media and it was the reason there was a job opening at unc.

Would you have gone to UNC with all that hanging over them?

You'd be crazy to take that job at that time.
TAMU just got a huge bump in resources, got out from under the thumb of texas, just hired a new football coach and the basketball coach is just in his 2nd or 3rd year (honeymoon period for all), just opened a brand spanking new baseball stadium.....its a plum job. Hyman is in his 60s, this is the perfect retirment gig. He'll probably have one major project and ride off into the sunset.

apparently we have a different understanding of the term "loyalty".
But to answer your question: Yes. I'd have wanted to help my alma mater in any way possible to climb out from under the scandal.

Otherwise under your definition Dabo should be beating down Alabama's door after Saban leaves.
There is a difference between professional loyalty and emotional loyalty. Clemson is an emotional issue for us. Athletics and athletics administration is just a job to them.

this will likely be Hymans last move. He could just as easily have finished his career at unc making at the very least the same amount of money TAMU or usuck pay. Plus, he would have had arguably the most important sports-related job in the state of North Carolina--the other being the basketball coach at unc--but, of course, the AD is the coach's boss. The AD at TAMU is far from the most important sports job in Texas, particularly when one includes professional sports.....in North Carolina, college sports (read unc) STILL outweighs the Bobcats and Panthers.
As I said in my OP, this move and the timing of it raises a lot of questions.

1.5 mil vs. 800k, same league, and closer to home and family. This is a no brainer for hyman.
