And keeping Clemson fans out of the stadium won’t keep the Tigers off the field!

17 years ago, 2005: Natural disasters dominated the news in

2005. A devastating storm, Hurricane Katrina, and its aftermath was the top story for the year. Katrina damaged a lot of refineries on its path of destruction, resulting in gas prices topping $3 a gallon at the pumps. Natalie Holloway goes missing in Aruba. BTK Serial Killer Dennis Rader finally taunted the police one too many times, and upon his capture and conviction, was given 10 consecutive life sentences.
The epic “Right to Die” case of Terri Schiavo divided opinions in the country, and in the courts. Ultimately, her feeding tube that was keeping her brain dead body alive was removed, and she died on March 31st. Michael Jackson is acquitted on June 14 of all 10 counts in the child molestation case that involved a 13-year-old male cancer survivor and which the alleged victim's family claimed took place at the pop star's Neverland ranch in Santa Barbara County, Calif., in 2003.
The ACC added another new member this year, in the form of the Boston College Eagles. This addition resulted in the conference creating two six team divisions, and playing a Conference Championship game for the first time. No. 23 Florida State (5-3, 8-5) was the ACC Champion for 2005. They defeated the No. 7 Virginia Tech Hokies (7-1, 11-2) in the inaugural ACC Championship Game, by a score of 27-22. Florida State would go on to lose the Orange Bowl to No. 3 Penn State, 26-23, in THREE overtimes. Virginia Tech would go on to defeat No. 15 Louisville 35-24 in the Gator Bowl. The expanded ACC also had three other ranked teams, No. 17 Miami, No. 18 Boston College, and No. 21 Clemson.
Unanimous 2005 National Champions were the 13-0 Texas Longhorns of Coach Mack Brown. They defeated the USC Trojans in the BCS National Championship game in the Rose Bowl, due to some late game heroics by quarterback Vince Young, who literally scored a last second touchdown to win it, 41-38. They were also Champions of the Big 12, having totally destroyed Colorado 70-3 in the Big 12 Championship game.
At Clemson, Coach Tommy Bowden had revamped his staff again following the disappointment of 2004. He had a new Offensive Coordinator in Rob Spence, and a new Defensive Coordinator in Vic Koenning. Clemson QB Charlie Whitehurst was back for his Senior season. The season began with a return engagement with Texas A&M, this time in Death Valley. On an interesting side note, Les Koenning, a cousin of new Clemson Defensive Coordinator Vic Koenning, was the A&M Offensive Coordinator. Vic barely won the battle of the Koennings, as Clemson prevailed in a thriller, 25-24. Next up, we got a No.25 ranking, and a 28-24 road win over Maryland.
But, then the No. 13 Miami Hurricanes came to Tigertown, and they were determined to avenge last seasons loss. Clemson was now ranked No. 20, and this game was an instant classic. The Canes finally prevailed 36-30 in 3OT's, when a rushed Charlie Whitehurst pass was intercepted to kill Clemson's chance at sending the game to yet another OT. Next up, Boston College would visit Death Valley for the first time as a league member.
BC had a tough as nails QB named Matt Ryan, who would live up to his future nickname of “Matty Ice” on this day. Clemson's David Dunham nearly decapitated him with a dead center chest hit that knocked his helmet off at one point during the game. But, he eventually got back up, and with the game tied 10-10, scared the bejeebers out of the home fans with a last drive with time running down, until an interception by Tye Hill forced the game to overtime at 10-10. But, BC then won the OT battle, and the game, 16-13, and Matt Ryan earned some serious respect from the Clemson fans.
Next up, a road trip to tiny Groves Stadium to face Wake Forest, who once again was not having a good season. But, did I mention Wake always gave Tommy Bowden fits? They completed the headache again on this day, downing the Tigers by a score of 37-27. It would be one of only four games Wake would win all year. TV announcers were using “that word” to describe the results of this game. Still on the road, we went to visit Chuckie Dynamite and NC State. State would wind up at 7-5 for the year, and the Tigers gave them one of the five losses, by a score of 31-10.
Clemson dashed home for a 37-7 breather against Temple, before hitting the short road to Atlanta to visit Coach Chan Gailey's GT team. As it turned out, Bobby Dodd Stadium was up to its old time tricks, as the Jackets stung the Tigers, 10-9. But then, just as in 2003 when rumblings of discontent began, the team suddenly found another gear. The offense exploded into a 49-20 blasting of Duke at home, and followed that up with another impressive win over Pappa Bowden, now in his 30th season at FSU. Clemson took down the No. 17 Noles by an easy score of 35-14, leaving heads scratching all over the place.
So, we rolled into The Roach with a 6-4 record, and needed a win to better our bowl outlook, against a No. 19 South Carolina squad now being coached by one Head Ball Coach Steve Spurrier, who Granny Holtz had somehow lured out of retirement to succeed him in Cooterville. They were 7-3 coming into this game, and looking for a win to better their own bowl opportunities. But, in a close fought, hard nosed defensive struggle, Tommy Bowden pulled out his South Carolina magic wand one more time, as Clemson won 13-9. Of note, with the 13-9 win over South Carolina, Charlie Whitehurst became the first QB from either school to start and win four consecutive games against his rival school. Clemson now leads the series 63-36-4, having won the last four in a row.
We took a No. 23 ranking into the Champs Sports Bowl, against a 7-5 Colorado team from the Big 12. (The same Colorado team that had been blasted 70-3 by Vince Young and Texas in the Big 12 Championship Game.) Clemson came away with a workmanlike 19-10 win in Charlie Whitehurst's last game as Clemson quarterback. All 2005 results below.
No. 17 Texas A&M W 25–24 At Maryland No. 25 W 28–24 No. 13 Miami No. 20 L 30–36 3OT Boston College L 13-16 OT At Wake Forest L 27-37 At NC State W 31–10 Temple W 37–7 At Georgia Tech L 9-10 Duke W 49–20 No. 17 Florida State W 35–14 At No. 19 South Carolina W 13–9 (Clemson leads the series 63-36-4.)
No. 23 Clemson vs. Colorado Champs Sports Bowl W 19–10
