158 years ago, the bloody Civil War lurched toward its end.

12

Mar 30, 2023, 8:27 AM [ in reply to Re: Hill Watch...158 days!!! ]

January 31 - The Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution (conditional prohibition of slavery and involuntary servitude) passes narrowly, in the House of Representatives. Also on January 31, Confederate General Robert E. Lee becomes general-in-chief of the Confederate armies.

February - Columbia, South Carolina burns, as Confederate forces flee from advancing Union forces.

February 3 – Hampton Roads Conference: Union and Confederate leaders discuss peace terms.

February 22 – Tennessee adopts a new constitution that abolishes slavery.

March 4 - Abraham Lincoln is sworn in for a second term as President of the United States.

March 13 – The Confederate States of America agrees to the use of African American troops.

April 1 – Battle of Five Forks: In Petersburg, Virginia, Confederate General Robert E. Lee begins his final offensive.

April 2 – Confederate President Jefferson Davis and most of his Cabinet flee the Confederate capital of Richmond, Virginia, which is taken by Union troops the next day.

April 9 – Confederate States Army General Robert E. Lee surrenders to Union Army General Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Court House, effectively ending the war.

This did not sit well with many Confederate sympathizers, among them a man named John Wilkes Booth. He had schemed with a group to capture President Lincoln and several other prominent politicians, to use as leverage to end the war in favor of the South, and the end of the War obviously thwarted these plans.

On April 13, Booth was in the crowd outside the White House when Lincoln gave an impromptu speech from his window. During the speech, Lincoln stated that he was in favor of granting suffrage to the former slaves. Infuriated, Booth declared that it would be the last speech that Lincoln would ever make.

Booth had free access to all parts of Ford's Theatre as a famous and popular actor who had frequently performed there and who was well known to its owner John T. Ford, even having his mail sent there. On the morning of Good Friday, April 14, 1865, Booth went to Ford's Theatre to get his mail. While there, he was told that the President and Mrs. Lincoln would be attending the play Our American Cousin at Ford's Theatre that evening. He immediately set about making plans for an assassination, which included making arrangements with livery stable owner James W. Pumphrey for a getaway horse and an escape route. Later that night, at 8:45 pm, Booth informed fellow conspirators Powell, Herold, and Atzerodt of his intention to kill Lincoln. He assigned Powell to assassinate Secretary of State William H. Seward, and Atzerodt to do so to Vice President Andrew Johnson. Herold would assist in their escape into Virginia.

He slipped into Lincoln's box at around 10:14 p.m. as the play progressed and shot the President in the back of the head with a .41 caliber Deringer pistol. Booth then jumped from the President's box to the stage, where he raised his knife and shouted "Sic semper tyrannis". (Latin for "Thus always to tyrants," attributed to Brutus at Caesar's assassination; state motto of Virginia, and mentioned in the new "Maryland, My Maryland", future anthem of Booth's Maryland.)

Booth's plan to decapitate the government and throw the North into chaos failed, as Vice President Andrew Johnson was unharmed, and Secretary of State Seward, while grievously injured by his would be assassin, eventually recovered. Andrew Johnson became the 17th President upon Lincoln's death on April 15.

So, the bloody Civil War was finally over, but without the steadying hand of Lincoln to guide the government, and forego punishment for their transgressions, the nightmares were just beginning for the South. There would be years of Reconstruction, carpetbaggers, and misery to follow. Such is ever war.

In non-war news of 1865:

January 4 – The New York Stock Exchange opens its first permanent headquarters at 10-12 Broad near Wall Street, in New York City.

February 21 – John Deere receives a patent for ploughs.

March – Hamm's Brewery opens in St. Paul, Minnesota.March 25

March 25 - The Claywater Meteorite explodes just before reaching ground level in Vernon County, Wisconsin; fragments having a combined mass of 3.3 lb are recovered.

April 6 – German chemicals producer Badische Anilin- und Sodafabrik (BASF) is founded in Mannheim.

April 27 - The steamboat Sultana, carrying 2,300 passengers, explodes and sinks in the Mississippi River, killing 1,800, mostly Union survivors of the Andersonville Prison.

May 5 - In North Bend, Ohio (a suburb of Cincinnati), the first train robbery in the United States takes place.

July – The Christian Mission, later renamed The Salvation Army, is founded in Whitechapel, London, by William and Catherine Booth.

July 4 – Lewis Carroll publishes his children's novel Alice's Adventures in Wonderland in England[.

July 5 - The U.S. Secret Service is founded.

July 5 - The first speed limit is introduced in Britain: 2 mph in town and 4 mph in the country.

July 21 – Wild Bill Hickok – Davis Tutt shootout: In the market square of Springfield, Missouri, Wild Bill Hickok shoots Little Dave Tutt dead over a poker debt, in what is regarded as the first true western fast draw showdown.

September 26 – Champ Ferguson becomes the first person (and one of only two) to be convicted of war crimes for actions taken during the American Civil War, found guilty by a U.S. Army tribunal on 23 charges, arising from the murder of 53 people. He is hanged on October 20, two days after the conviction of Henry Wirz for war crimes.

October 26 - The Standard Oil Company opens. On that same day, the paddlewheel steamer SS Republic sinks off the Georgia coast, with a cargo of $400,000 in coins.

December 18 – Secretary of State William H. Seward declares the Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution ratified by three-quarters of the states, including those in secession. As of December 6, slavery is legally outlawed in the last two slave states of Kentucky and Delaware, and the remaining 45,000 slaves are freed.

There were MANY other news events this year, even with the length of this post, a lot of culling went on. 1865 was a busy year.

Re: Famous Birthdays today

The irony of Van Gogh"s short life of poverty and depression that ended in suicide at 37 was that he was posthumously famous with some of his paintings now worth millions. John "Gomez/Riddler" Astin is still kickin at 93. When I see Eric Clapton, I think of his young son falling out of an apartment window, for which he wrote "Tears In Heaven". Celine Dion's heart will go on.

I can't decide if Brazilian singer Anitta looks like Sofia Vergaro or Rosalyn Sanchez. Donna D'Errico was a Baywatch lifeguard among other things. Who needs resuscitation? Thomas Rhett is a country singer from Valdosta, Georgia. Stanley Kirk Burrell, AKA MC Hammer, a rapper, dancer, actor, preacher, etc. went from about $300 million to bankrupt, but he's 2 Legit 2 Quit.
