98 - Seattle Seahawks Selected Leroy Hill with Pick 98 in the 2005 NFL Draft

LB Leroy Hill (2001-2004) was one of Clemson’s best ever to play the game. He followed that great Clemson career with a long and productive NFL career.

But you probably would not have expected such greatness after his first two seasons at Clemson. Sometimes a guy’s career seems to take off at just the right time!

Before Clemson:

According to GoUpstate.com, Leroy Hill’s childhood might have been less than ideal. According to GoUpstate.com:

“…he had developed a special bond with his father since staying with him after his parents divorced when he was 12.

"He had been a child who was always attached to me, always holding onto my shirt and all," Hill Sr. said. "And it was just more adventurous for a boy to stay out on the farm with its horses, cattle and big pond."

Father and son would work long, hard days on the daily chores together (Leroy was driving a tractor by age 12). A special time for a boy who had no desire to stray far from a dad who now misses not only the proximity but also the helping hands around the pastures.

"He and I were the only ones out there, I didn't have hired help," Hill Sr. said. "I could just send him out to do something and not worry about it.”

https://www.goupstate.com/story/news/2003/09/02/humble-beginning/29681917007/

While at Clemson:

As a freshman and sophomore, Hill seemed like just a typical college football player. He seemed to be just another guy who could make some contributions to the team.

But, Leroy Hill’s development took off his junior season like a rocket ship. According to the Union-Recorder:

“Hill took his licks during his first two years of college, but burst onto the scene as a junior when he earned his first All-ACC first team defensive honor. Hill repeated his effort in obtaining that same accolade the following year, but also took it one step further as he was named the ACC Defensive Player of the Year in 2004.”

ClemsonTigers.com provides insights into that first year that Hill was named All-ACC, 2003, as follows:

“Hill led the Tigers in tackles with 133 and in tackles for loss with 25 this season. His tackle for loss total led the ACC and ranked in the top three in the nation. He finished the season with 15 tackles and five tackles for loss in the Tigers 63-17 win over South Carolina last Saturday.”

https://clemsontigers.com/leroy-hill-named-first-team-all-acc/

The next season, Leroy Hill was named ACC Defensive Player of the Year. Again, According to ClemsonTigers.com:

“Clemson linebacker Leroy Hill was named the ACC’s Defensive Player of the Year, the conference announced on Friday. The senior had a team-high 106 tackles, including 19 for loss, and eight sacks to rank among the ACC and national leaders. He finished with 310 career tackles, 15th-most in Clemson history, despite starting only two seasons. Earlier in the week Hill was named to the All-ACC First Team.

“It feels great to receive this award. It’s the ultimate defensive award in the ACC and a big accomplishment, and I want to thank the voters,” Hill said. “I also want to thank Coach Lovett, the defensive staff, and all my teammates. We had great defensive linemen and defensive backs that allowed me to make a lot of plays.”

After Clemson:

The Seattle Seahawks selected Leroy Hill with the 98th Pick (3rd Round) of the 2005 NFL Draft. He played eight seasons for the Seahawks. According to Pro-Football-Reference.com he registered the following stats:

Leroy Hill:
- 512 Tackles (379 Solo, 133 Assisted)
- 41 Tackles for Loss
- 2 Fumble Recoveries
- 1 Fumble Return for Touchdown

North Carolina Highway 98 is a 43.7 mile state highway that runs from the west end at US 15/US 70/US 501 in Durham to the east end at US US 64 Alt/NC 231 near Spring Hope, passing through the town of Wake Forest. Dexter Lawrence is from Wake Forest.

Sesquicentennial State Park, with the interesting 16-letter and 6-syllable first name, is about 12 miles northeast of Columbia in the sandhills region of South Carolina. It is a 1,419 acre CCC built park created in 1937 and given the name because of Columbia’s Sesquicentennial Celebration in 1936. The park includes a 30 acre park lake for fishing, canoeing, kayaking, and paddle boats and boards. There are 78 campsites for RVs or tents. Biking and hiking trails are available including the 2-mile paved ADA-accessible Sandhills loop trail around the lake with a 100 foot aluminum bridge over Jackson Creek and a spillway that resembles a waterfall. The park is one of the few with a dog park and the only South Carolina state park with a splash pad with 26 sprayers for family fun and respite from the city.

My parents used to take us to "Sesqui" when I was a kid. It seemed like we would ride out Two Notch Road forever to get there. Now the city has swallowed it up.

Saw a guy almost drown at Sesquicentennial Park when I was in high school - he tried to do a back flip off a diving board and hit the board before not surfacing. A friend dived in and pulled him to the surface. He had been knocked unconscious .

98 - Nyles Pinckney Was Credited with 98 Tackles for Clemson

Clemson DL Nyles Pinckney was a talented player who played every snap at defensive lineman or on special teams – except one. And that one offensive play was so much fun!

However, he will forever be remembered for a certain play on special teams. And that play was on the biggest stage of all.

According to his bio on ClemsonTigers.com:

Senior captain who exited Clemson credited with 98 tackles (13.5 for loss), 3.0 sacks, a sack, a forced fumble and three fumble recoveries in 1,125 defensive snaps over 55 career games (15 starts) from 2017-20 after redshirting in 2016 … also played two offensive snaps, scoring on a one-yard touchdown run in 2020 … before completing his bonus year of eligibility elsewhere, was part of a Clemson senior class that was the first in school history to go undefeated at Death Valley in a four-year span (27-0 from 2017-20).

https://clemsontigers.com/sports/football/roster/nyles-pinckney/

Of note: Pinckney scored that one-yard touchdown in 2020 at Georgia Tech. He lined up as a fullback with Bryan Bresee behind him as a tailback. Good times:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CnPh3M8DNI0

Behind younger players such as Bryan Bresee and Tyler Davis, Pinckney decided to transfer for his super senior season. He played the 2021 season with Minnesota.

But, Pinckney will always be best remembered for one certain play. As much fun as the one-yard touchdown run was, he will forever be remembered as the Clemson player who stopped one of Nick Saban’s most head-scratching plays:

Somehow, it just never gets old!! Never!
