After Clemson shuts out the Gamechickens, Frank Howard blows a kiss good-bye to “Big Thursday” being in Columbia every season!!
Overview:
According to Wikipedia: “The 1959 Clemson Tigers football team was an American football team that represented Clemson College in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) during the 1959 college football season. In its 20th season under head coach Frank Howard, the team compiled a 9–2 record (6–1 against conference opponents), won the ACC championship, was ranked No. 11 in the final AP and Coaches Polls, defeated TCU in the 1959 Bluebonnet Bowl, and outscored opponents by a total of 285 to 103.”
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1959_Clemson_Tigers_football_team
Worthy of Note:
According to Wikipedia:
“The annual game against South Carolina was played on Thursday at the South Carolina State Fair for the final time. Clemson's 300th win came in the Bluebonnet Bowl against TCU.
Center Bill Thomas was the team captain. The team's statistical leaders included quarterback Harvey White with 770 passing yards, and fullback Doug Cline with 482 rushing yards, and halfback Bill Mathis with 70 points scored (11 touchdowns, 4 extra points).
Tackle Lou Cordileone was selected as a first-team All-American by Time magazine and a third-team All-American by the Associated Press (AP) and United Press International (UPI). Four Clemson players were selected as first-team players on the 1959 All-Atlantic Coast Conference football team: Cordileone; halfback Bill Mathis; end Gary Barnes; and center Paul Snyder.” https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1959_Clemson_Tigers_football_team
ClemsonTigers.com identifies several 1959 highlights worthy of note:
“Sept. 19, 1959 – Clemson defeated North Carolina in Chapel Hill 20-18 in a battle of top-20 teams. The Tar Heels were ranked No. 12 in the preseason poll.
Oct. 22, 1959 – Clemson won the last Big Thursday game by defeating South Carolina 27-0. Harvey White was on target all day, hitting 9-10 passes for 162 yards and two scores. Clemson fans tore down the steel goal posts, which were set in concrete, following the game.
Nov. 21, 1959 – Clemson defeated Wake Forest 33-31 for Clemson’s second ACC title in a row. George Usry scored on a one-yard run with 4:24 to go to give Clemson the triumph.
Dec. 19, 1959 – Clemson beat TCU in the Bluebonnet Bowl 23-7. The Horned Frogs, led by All-American and future Dallas Cowboy Bob Lilly, were ranked No. 7 in the nation entering the game. It was the highest-ranked team Frank Howard defeated in his 30 years as head coach.”
https://clemsontigers.com/clemson-football-historical-timeline/
ClemsonWiki also adds the following:
“September 19: Eighteenth-ranked Clemson travels to twelfth-ranked North Carolina, winning, 20-18. A crowd of 43,000 in Kenan Stadium watches as Clemson recovers a Tarheel fumble on the first play of the game, subsequently scoring on a two-yard run by Harvey White. Clemson scores again on a one-yard run by Doug Cline, and White passes to Bill Mathis for a two-point conversion, 14-0. North Carolina scores before the half but fails to kick the PAT so the halftime score stands at 14-6. In the third period, Clemson scores again on a Mathis two-yard run, score now 20-6. North Carolina successfully passes its way back to 20-18 on the strength of Tarheel quarterback Jack Cummings' arm, but a two-point attempt is stopped one yard shy of the goal line by Lowndes Shingler and Paul Snyder, and Coach Frank Howard's Tigers secure their first-ever victory in Kenan Stadium.
…
October 22: Final Big Thursday game against South Carolina - seventeeth-ranked Tigers shut out the Gamecocks to end the State Fair series, 27-0. Famous photo of Frank Howard blowing a kiss to the end of Big Thursday is taken right after the game. Kick-off is at 2 p.m., tickets cost $5.75.”
https://clemsonwiki.com/wiki/1959
Not a bad ticket price!!
As for that 1959 Bluebonnet Bowl:
When I think of the 1959 Bluebonnet Bowl I now think about 2k® sharing his fond memories of going to the game as a kid. If I remember correctly, 2K, I believe you went to the game with your uncle (please correct me if I am mistaken on that). I know it was a special time for sure!!
According to Wikipedia:
“This was TCU's third Southwest Conference (SWC) title in five seasons. Clemson was the first school to play in two bowls in the same calendar year (after playing in the 1959 Sugar Bowl on January 1), with their third Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) title in four years.”
…
Clemson started the scoring with a 22-yard field goal by Lon Armstrong, but TCU struck back with a 19-yard pass from Jack Redding to Harry Moreland with 5:45 left in the first half, to give the Frogs a 7–3 halftime lead. The game went scoreless in the third period, but in the fourth quarter, Harvey White threw a pass to Gary Barnes, who galloped in for a touchdown to give the Tigers the lead. Two plays later, Donald George's pass was intercepted by Armstrong. Clemson scored 13 more points with the help of Lowndes Shingler, as the Tigers won 23–7. Shingler ran for 65 yards on 3 carries, and threw for 24 yards on 2 for 4 passing. White went 4 for 9 with 69 yards passing and 1 interception.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1959_Bluebonnet_Bowl
What a great way to end a season with a bowl victory over a Top 10 ranked opponent!
Results:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1959_Clemson_Tigers_football_team
After the shutout in Columbia, Clemson leads the series over the Gamechickens 33-21-3. Of note: During the 1950s (1950-1959) Clemson went 4-5-1 against the Chickens. Clemson has posted a winning record over the Gamechickens EVERY decade since then!! Note: That does not mean any period of ten years starting at a specifically selected self-serving year.
What it does mean?: It means Clemson has a winning record vs the Chickens in the: - 1960s - 1970s - 1980s - 1990s - 2000s - 2010s
Also in 1959:
According to ClemsonTigers.com, Clemson Baseball continues to shine brightly:
“May 16-18, 1959 – After the 1959 regular season, Clemson, Wake Forest and North Carolina were tied for first place, forcing a playoff among the three. Clemson beat Wake Forest 4-2 at Thomasville, N.C. on May 16 and downed North Carolina 9-7 at Gastonia, N.C. to claim the ACC crown.
June 4-6, 1959 – Clemson raced through the NCAA District III Playoffs at Gastonia, N.C., downing Georgia Tech 9-6 and Florida State twice (24-2, 5-0) to advance to Omaha.
June 13-15, 1959 – The Tigers lost to Arizona 3-2 on June 13 in 12 innings in their first game in Omaha. They bounced back and defeated Colorado State 7-1 the next day, but were eliminated by Penn State 7-0 on June 15.
1959 – Clemson was ranked No. 7 in the final Collegiate Baseball poll.”

There is no #66 for Clemson this year so I’m going back to spotlight a player I haven’t covered yet.
So todays player spotlight is #93 Caden Story. He is a redshirt junior defensive lineman for the 2025 Clemson Tigers.
He “Enters 2025 credited with four tackles in 119 defensive snaps over 19 career games.”.
He was a “Multi-time state champion and all-state selection who played for his father, Clifford Story, at Lanett High School”. He was “credited with 184 tackles, 54 quarterback pressures, 37 sacks and two interceptions over his final three seasons(there)”. Story “was one of the state’s most decorated defensive linemen in 2020 and 2021, as he earned first-team all-area from the Opelika-Auburn News and first-team all-state honors while earning both Valley-Times Defensive Player of the Year and AHSAA 2A Defensive Lineman of the Year in both seasons”. He “also played basketball, helping his team to back-to-back state championship game berths”.
Out of high school, he was a “consensus four-star prospect … 247Sports ranked him 23rd among the nation’s defensive tackles and 10th among all players in Alabama … Rivals.com placed him among the nation’s 30-best defensive tackles and No. 16 overall in the state of Alabama … member of the ESPN300 who ESPN.com ranked as the nation’s No. 23 defensive tackle and No. 11 player in Alabama … ranked by On3 Sports as the No. 16 player in Alabama and No. 38 defensive tackle in the class … PrepStar placed him as No. 221 among its national Top 300”.
Caden is the “son of two former collegiate athletes … his father, Clifford, played football and baseball at Jacksonville State … nephew of 14-year NFL tight end Marcus Pollard and brother of Kentucky defensive back Kristian Story“.

Yea Caden does actually remind me of William “The Fridge” Perry.
Interestingly, #66 is one of 3 jersey numbers to be retired by Clemson football. (The other two being #4 and #28. Though #4 was briefly brought back for DW4 to wear.) #66 was retired in 1887 to honor Banks McFadden but The Fridge was one of the last players to ever wear the number.
