Good grief! Our southern states didn't rank very high! I live in NC and have lived in SC and GA.-all low ranking states. I can't get over that NJ is number 5! Really???

Re: Have you all seen this list? Yikes...what state do you live?

Apr 30, 2017, 5:05 AM

People look at Jersey and think of the Sopranos, and the Northern Meadowlands Area which is pure trash...

...however the majority of the state is very pretty. I say this as a non-native New Jerseyan, who has no connection to the state. I have a friend who's currently living in/near Lambertville, NJ which isn't too far away from Princeton. It's a really pretty, pleasant area which wreaks of the old world (in a good way). I think a lot of the old geezers on this site (no offense) would really love it. It's almost offensively peaceful. Every time I've been there, I've been overwhelmed with the nice restaurants & breweries in the area despite being so isolated. It's worth looking into.

This ranking has literally nothing to do with which states are prettiest, or which have the best food/drink or whatever. They used 3 criteria.. poverty, education levels and life expectancy.

well that, and median income, where the south tends to rank poorly.

Re: Have you all seen this list? Yikes...what state do you live?

Apr 30, 2017, 6:57 AM

The higher median income is completely neutralized by the absurd taxes. The state does have nice areas, but the state (even the rural areas) is too crowded and too expensive.

While the toll costs are high, they aren't quite that high. The crossings into Philly are $5 and the crossings into NYC are up to $15 now. Both only paid leaving NJ. I'd still gladly take high tolls over high property tax. If you have a $200,000 house (which doesn't get you much) the property tax is $5,000 a year.

Minnesota, #4. MN always ranks very highly on these lists, so not exactly a surprise.

SC ranked #41 because of "high poverty, low educational attainment, and relatively low life expectancy." Those were the 3 statistical criteria used, so I'm not sure why anyone is surprised. There are a great many things about SC to love and be proud of, but let's be real..

Re: Have you all seen this list? Yikes...what state do you live?

Apr 30, 2017, 5:13 AM

Guys, let's not get too upset about a list. They've got a metric in which they're evaluating states, and then they ranked them based on the formula. Whether you like it or not, the vast majority of the Southern states are poorly educated, have high crime rates, and don't do much in the way of economy. They're also exceedingly poor, compared to the Northeast and West. It really shouldn't be much of a surprise that they don't thrive in lists like this...

...that isn't to say you shouldn't love where you're from or where you live. Just understand that there's not much appeal for those who are trying to start a new life.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That last sentence is one of the most ignorant comments

Apr 30, 2017, 6:42 AM

I've read on Tigernet. If there is not much appeal for those starting a new life here then the Carolinas and Georgia would not have so many transplants from the northeast and midwest. Quality of life and job opportunities are the reasons those states are among the leaders in population growth.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: That last sentence is one of the most ignorant comments

May 4, 2017, 11:23 AM

I'll admit I was a bit off-base. There's certainly a good amount of appeal for young people in places like Charotte or Atlanta...however you don't see newly-graduated people moving into places like Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, South Carolina, Kentucky, or even Tennessee in droves.

I'm not sure QOL is one of the largest driving factors in most of the South. I think it's definitely more based on the job opportunities, which have often come by luring companies with big tax breaks. It's smart, since it's attracting lots of people, but it'll be interesting to see if it's sustainable since it's bringing in a lot of new jobs, but not from home-grown companies. The most innovative economies are still in the Northeast & West, which is why the ultra high-skilled young grads are still flocking towards those cities.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Mass is #1 is all you need to know that...

Apr 30, 2017, 5:34 AM

their metrics are buffoonish. I guess taxes were not a consideration.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Mass is #1 is all you need to know that...

Apr 30, 2017, 6:18 AM

income tax in Mass is 5.1%, much lower than sc which is the highest in the south at 7%.

sales tax is also lower in Mass, go figure.

then of course there is median income, where mass ranks roughly 50% higher than SC

Compare property taxes on homes

Apr 30, 2017, 7:28 AM [ in reply to Re: Mass is #1 is all you need to know that... ]

Northern states are well above SC. You can't even compare them. My company is based in Ohio and my coworkers are paying $10,000 and more where my 2,600 sq ft SC homes taxes are only $1,500. I'd rather have my salary here then there salary in Ohio. I've lived in 4 different states and been to 47 for my job. I will take here over any of the others.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Compare property taxes on homes

Apr 30, 2017, 7:35 AM

salaries in Ohio are roughly the same as SC. Besides, we were talking about MASS being Number 1, not sure how Ohio got into the mix. And was mentioned a few times on this thread, people are moving down for the weather, and yes growing opportunities in the south. growth in the region is some of the highest in the nation. IN 20 years these metrics will be a lot different.

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Mass is #1 is all you need to know that...

May 4, 2017, 12:06 PM [ in reply to Mass is #1 is all you need to know that... ]

As Balm showed above, Mass' reputation for high taxes is worse than the actual tax burden. You don't have to agree with their metrics, but what would you add/remove when it comes to their metrics? I think the poverty rate, education rate, median income, life expectancy are all pretty important...however I think they should also include stuff like cost of living (which would be very detrimental to the NE/Western states) and crime.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Have you all seen this list? Yikes...what state do you live?

Apr 30, 2017, 7:13 AM

During my Army career I either lived or spent considerable time in SC, NC, GA, FL, VA, MO, KS, NE, MD, PA, LA, TX, CA, MS, AL, AZ, OH, KY, TN, AR, NY, NJ, Wash DC etc... Bottom line I've spent a lot of time in every region of the USA except Alaska and Hawaii and every region/State has it's good points and bad points.

Choosing the best State to live in is subjective to what a person chooses as important criteria which makes lists like the one in the OP an exercise in futility. Some folks might choose low taxes or low cost of living while others might choose the quality of hunting and fishing. As for me, I prefer the weather in the South and want to live close enough to Clemson that I can make it to all the home football games. So no ridiculous list compiled on statistics that I really could not care less about is going to make me think any more or less of the current State in which I reside...

Apr 30, 2017, 8:38 AM

account the tax rates, housing and living costs.

Ignore those factors and you'll always get a list that favors states that are usually blue on election day.

The ratings are bogus.

Why would growth rate be a good measure of QOL though? Popularity isn't necessarily synonymous with quality.

However, I do think that taxes & COL are very important.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Ridiculous. SC is really 50th best. No question about it.

I live in North Alabama (haven't met NAT, that um aware of) and love it. It's the polar opposite of what this list states. You can find great places to live anywhere and go 60 miles and find the worse. Thrive where you are planted and make yourself better.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

it's an exercise in absurdity to quantify an entire state

Apr 30, 2017, 10:47 AM

as being "better" to live in than another. In order for this poll to be truly accurate, the assumption is that EVERYWHERE in a given state is basically the same.

Is living in Hilton Head and McCormick equivalent?
What about Allendale and Pawley's Island?
Columbia and Clemson?

There are similar examples in every state. Is Watts = Malibu? Is Norcross = Cairo, Ga?

Just dumb.
