Losses of old friendships, of pet animals and of course loved ones due to death!
In sports there may be another time in that dedicated & planned schedule for that team to compete & play that game again so to possibly win and live another day..
But in real life you only get ONE shot at winning and enjoying rewarding relationships so dear to the mind & heart before you’ve lost them, forever, except thru the memory which for some has sadly been clouded or wiped out due to old age and/or dementia & Alzheimer’s..
Something that some of us have personally experienced, seeing now or suffering from ourselves.
Saying, know what a real loss is in life and what isn’t.

I agree LBB... A game is a game, it is not life changing. I think the older you get, the more you feel this way.

decades ago compared to now indicate I still like to win but it’s not as important as it was. I guess that is wisdom. I see parents and kids on the weekend travel ball circuit who act like I used to and it’s cringeworthy. What matters most are the people I care about and who care about me.

That realization comes with age, wisdom and experience. When young, you have none of that and you don't think about death or life changing events. It's more about today. Things come and go. As you age, things settle down. Family, close friends and for Christians, God become more important. You realize life is nearing an end, especially when you have outlived most of your peers. You are able to look back on all the prayers that were answered, and how lucky you were to have lived a good meanungful life. And you realize there were many superficial things that you wasted far too much of your life doing and if you had to do it over, those things would not be a big part of your life.
Sports, hobbies, entertainment, material things can occupy way too much of our life and in the moment we think they are important, but in the end, we realize they were not, and the time, effort, expense and putting them above those personal relationships and caring for others was a huge mistake.
Our young people need new role models and mentors who can guide them to make those important things in their life a priority.
