I know all of the above were supposed to start being torn down in January. I have not been to Clemson this calendar year. Anybody been over and see what's going on?

I work on campus. It’s scheduled to be finished sometime in 2025. They’re cleaning out the buildings and demolition is in early stages. It’ll be a green space on campus when it’s complete. Lots of good memories there!

Former employee here. A good portion of the bowling equipment was bought back from our supplier. Whatever was left went to the state auction system/surplus warehouse. As others have alluded to, all bowling equipment is now gone. Out of curiosity, I’ve been watching the state auction/surplus website and haven’t seen anything listed yet. But keep your eyes peeled and something may pop up. After the very last shift, my coworkers and I got to bring home some “souvenirs”. I’ll value those just as much as I do my ring.

D6 '76-80. Facing Death Valley, Hartwell, and the mountains right over the driveway into interior of facility. Best view on the whole campus. Remember holding up numbered cards as the coeds were walking underneath, feel bad about pelting the poor meter lady just doing her job, sunning/drinking beer on the ledge, and using neighbors dorm rooms if they left their windows open when they went home for the weekend. Throwing frisbees down the hall knocking down the asbestos insulation until you couldn't see the other end. Soaping the floors and slip/sliding the entire length. Good times!

Long time lurker, saw this thread and had to become a first time poster lol. I started working at the URC in the summer of 2021 and stayed until the very end when the university shut us down in May of last year.

The 4 pool tables were relocated to dorms. Our ping pong tables were on life support and were going to the dumpster. In terms of bowling equipment (shoes, bowling balls, pins, pinsetters, spare parts, etc.), a few things were kept for archives, but our supplier got first dibs on everything else. Whatever was left after they got what they wanted went to the state auction system/surplus warehouse in Springdale near the airport.

Plans for demo started pre 2010, but the 07-09 recession put it on the back burner. They finally resurfaced some time between 14-16 and again between 19-21. The BoT finally voted in October of 22. Part of the reason why demo kept getting put off had to do with the foundation of Holmes. The wall with the mural that ran next to the walkway that went behind the lanes is a part of the foundation system for Holmes, and if they knock it down, they put the north side of Holmes at risk of collapsing. So they have 2 options that they've pondering over the last several years. #1 Come up with a way to keep the wall or #2 build a new foundation system for the north side of Holmes then demo the wall.

The fate of the URC, and the Union in general, was inevitable, but it still hurts. It was my home away from home. I spent more time there than anywhere else on campus, and many others did too. I always enjoyed it when the old timers would come in and share stories about grabbing a beer at Edgar's then hitting the lanes, along with the other activities they participated in while at the URC (if those walls could talk lol). Once again, another piece of Clemson history has fallen to the almighty dollar. "Recreational Greenspace" is code for IPTAY parking.........which is code for moolah. As of now, the university has no intentions of building a new student union, which makes Clemson the only major university in the southeast without one. We were an enterprise of the PRTM department via Leisure Skills, we weren't trying to make a profit. Everything was $1 but we did make a decent chunk from private reservations. We routinely stayed slammed pack between students, people from the community and weekly clubs (bowling club, billiards club and ping pong club). On-campus students aren't happy because they now have even less options of things to do, especially if they don't have a vehicle. It's either Fike or DT now. And community members feel like the university is burning bridges with them between this and losing swimming access at Fike. Anyway, I digress. This post is way longer than I intended it to be, sorry about that.

Great insight. And memories. Thanks for sharing.***
