Then you haven’t been to the right steak house. I know of 2 in northern Ohio that can make a steak much better than I ever will. And they are NOT cheap.
Here’s why-
1. They start with a better cut of meat than I can get. 2. They age the steak onsite for weeks. 3. They have a professional chef nailing the cooking process. 4. They have the ability to seer at > 1000 degrees.
Mancy’s steak house in Toledo has been making great steaks for 125 years. Any restaurant that stays in business that long has superior connections for supply and know what they are doing to stay in business. Especially when you are charging over $100 a plate.

1. We have a place here that sells the same steaks as the restaurants - costs more than ingles but less than at a restaurant
2. They’ve been aged
3. I know how to cook a steak - I know good steak (I’m a certified steak competition judge)
4. Anything over 500 degrees is over kill
Like I said, eating out should be to get something you can’t get better at home, if for you that’s a steak in Toledo, more power to you. My weakness is fine Italian. I can’t master the subtleties in the sauces.

As a professional chef, there is no grill under 600 degrees that I have ever seen in 30+ years of cooking everything for fast food to high end culinary. Cooking a great steak is easy. It’s all about the quality of the meat (prime) and the aging process. Some dry aged steaks take months. I’ve aged a porterhouse from 6lbs down to 4 over the process of trimming away the meat that turns during the process. You’re paying for the original weight plus he time to cure. The absolute best method to cook a steak is the reverse sear process. Smoke a 3” thick filet to internal temp of 140 and then sear at the end. The result is a steak that is as tender as a croc pot roast with flavor better than ANY steakhouse steak.

Madison, Wisconsin named Smoky's Club. We were sent up there from Orangeburg on a "Management Training Seminar" at the University of Wisconsin many years ago. (Those sessions were nicknamed "Charm School." I was often reminded in subsequent years that when it came to me, they wasted their money.)
Smoky's was the hangout, as it turned out, for most of the Wisconsin State Legislature. When the steaks came out of the kitchen, they were still literally sizzling on their hot metal plates. It was bovine ecstasy.
Just did a search, and found out the place was open for 69 years, but closed in 2021. So, too late now.

And just like the home grilled steak, it’s all just poop the next morning. Hall’s Chop House, Ruth’s Chris and other high priced steakhouses are NOT worth the price. Unless you are too lazy or too stupid to grill a great steak in your backyard.

You’re wrong. You can state your beliefs all you want. You can’t objectively comment on subjective experiences. If your statement was true, there would be no restaurants. However, fine dining is an art. Halls isn’t truly fine dining. Ruth’s Chris is NOT fine dining. They’re middle of the road. Fine dining will cost between $250-500 a plate. It’s life changing in my opinion. I have yet to find any backyard grill cook who could make a meal close to a Michelin star chef. No, Flemmings isn’t fine dining either. Go to the San Angel Inn in Mexico City. That’s a professional chef instead of the addicts hired by most of the aforementioned chain restaurants. These kids are not classically trained chefs. They may have a culinary degree, but lack the experience. It’s all subjective to each individual. I can’t east most restaurant food and call it great. Maybe I am a little spoiled. One guy might like a well done piece of jerky dried out over coals. One might need a chef to prepare a true world class meal to feel it’s great. One may think McDonald’s is the best burger they’ve ever had. Are any of them wrong. Nope! It’s subjective.

I agree with life changing....my journey in food started
Jun 19, 2023, 5:00 PM
|
|
when I was around 20, had no money, but had to impress the lady (now my wife). We went to a place in Charleston. As soon as the first bite went in my mouth, I stopped. Couldn't believe something could be so good (and my mom, now 82, was and still is a great cook!). I have spent the next thirty years trying to find that same stop-me-in-my-tracks feeling. Found it a handful of times after spending way too much much in all types of places. I love the search. It's one of mine and my wife's past times.
So yes....it changed my life...!! I'm hungry again!
go Tigers!

O ate a Rare steak in Fort worth that was aged so long it looked well done. Best steak ever. Waiter said they offered choice of aged 21 days or fresh. Fresh is coming in back door from slaughter house. Both were great, but aged was by far the best.

You can age a steak yourself. Google it. You don’t have to go to a friggin’ restaurant to get an aged steak.

The wife's marinade and time on my own grill tastes at least 95% as good as anything I've bought in a restaurant. No, I have not spent $100 on a steak...just the thought of blowing that kind of money would make me NOT enjoy it as I try to chew it.
I've been living in England for about 15 months and the pubs just throw a fresh cut of sirloin on the grill and serve it to you like that's how it's supposed to be done. Nah, give me one that's marinated for 24 hours. And if I ask for medium, can you, I dunno, TRY to see that it's cooked to spec?

I'm not claiming I can cook one better than a professional cook but when you factor in cost, time and satisfaction of doing it yourself, it's definitely better at home.

Its the whole dining experience. They really do try (in my experiences; CHS downtown) to make you feel treated. They also have a couple of sides (the corn 😙🤌) that are spectacular.
Sure you could source new wines at home and learn how to make some great sides too. There’s just a curve that comes with doing something well.

Went to Firebird’s up in Charlotte and I would not say it is the steak capital by any means. I do not normally eat steak in the restaurants because of their prices, but for some reason I did a few months back. Age old ribeye. Top 5 steaks I had ever eaten.
Had another where a friend had one of his cows processed. That meat was on another level.
When it comes to steak I can just do salt and pepper, marinades or A-1. Makes me no difference if the meat is good.

I've eaten at Hall's 3 or 4 times and have always walked out unimpressed. Have tried their wet and dry rubbed steaks. I grilled steaks last night that were far better.

Used to go to the Charleston location when Bill Hall was still fully engaged. He passed away a few yrs ago but the restaurant was completely different. He was called the singing chef and would sing a couple songs between courses in his deep baritone voice. The dining isn't as formal as it used to be. The food was always great! I usually selected the seafood or wildgame main course as he would serve elk, rabbit, pheasant and venis

When my wife and I want to go out for something special, we hit Grill 225 on the corner of Market and East Bay. They really look out for us. There is a waiter that has been there for about 10 years, and he is always our waiter and he treats us well and remembers us. I am not a "fine dining" type of guy, but the food there is never disappointing. Been to Hall's a couple of times....good...but I enjoy Grill 225 more. Just my 2 cents. Go Tigers!

Ruth Chris is just about like all of the fancy steak houses in big cities that are not old time favorite family owned type places. It's pretty good while you are eating it but everything is just over prepared, for lack of a better term. I have been to the same type of places in Orlando (Mortons), San Diego, LA, Las Vegas, Atlanta, Dallas (maybe Friscos .... can't remember) etc. etc. and they are all the same. I am always on someone else's dime, so I sure don't complain.

I think the point is the consistency. Admittedly, I've only been to Ruth's Chris once, I believe.
But like with Morton's... you got not windows, it is all about the consistent vibe.
(btw, when I was in grad school I would go to the Peddler on the north side of Greenville. Always loved that place.)

Comes down to what you are willing to pay. Is a $65-$100+ steak absurd to you?
When it comes to Halls, blind folded their $68 NY strip vs $30 strip from Outback, no in my opinion its not worth the extra $38.
That being said there are steak houses that are 100% worth the price. Stayed in Chicago for the Notre Dame game last season. Had the best steak of my life at Chicago Cut, Bone in Ribeye $84.

OUTBACK? Texas Roadhouse?
I will never go to these places for steak again in this lifetime. My wife will only orders strip and she has been served sirloin several times, like we would not know the difference. NEVER AGAIN.

Maybe not the best but worth the attempt once. The Big Texan 72oz steak in Amarillo. I got about 3/4 of the way before I tapped out. Didn't want steak for awhile either.
I was there once and didn't even try! But it was a fun place to visit!

Maybe for SC. But every tine steakhouse in any big city is going to have comparable prices to that

I have been to a few, DC, Chicago, Birmingham, Cootlumbia, Myrtle Beach to name a few areas. I love steak and enjoyed each place. Typically, the hype of a steakhouse doesn't deliver but I've never been disappointed.
I do prefer to stay at home and cook a good steak for the family. However, it is nice to be served from time to time.

It is. I can cook meats in pretty much any way you can think….I would still eat those steaks. So much variety and always cooked exactly how I want em. It’s expensive, but that experience every now and then is very nice to o be a part of.

Those of you criticizing Hall’s probably are routine visitors to Golden Corral! Hall’s is definitely expensive but worth it.

Now some might call me cheap--I prefer frugal but I won't bristle over the cheap moniker.
I like to think I'm pretty smart with my money. I try to be a good steward of what God has given me.
Matthew 15:17 says this: "Do not ye yet understand, that whatsoever entereth in at the mouth goeth into the belly, and is cast out into the draught?" In other words, the sewer.
The whole concept of worth it conflicts me. Economically, I want to spend under $5 on breakfast, under $10 on lunch, and under $15 on supper. When I eat at home, those numbers get much smaller, but I'm talking restaurants. Vacation, if you will.
I will allow myself a treat once in a while and spend $20-30 on a supper. Might even spend close to $20 on lunch. Anything more than that, or more frequently than "once in a while," and I'm hit with the reminder: "you will literally be flushing this money down the toilet within 24 hours."
The tastebuds are subject to the financial manager rather than the other way around.\
I've done the high-dollar Brazilian steak house buffet once. I've had a $40 plate at Peninsula Grill once. I've done $40 worth of seafood at Hyman's a couple of times. I've just adjusted my palate so that Texas Roadhouse or Outback is my guilty pleasure that I enjoy occasionally, and I really do enjoy it as much as anything I've ever eaten.
If you've got the money, and it's worth it to you, have at it.
As for me, I see where the OP is coming from.

If you’re using Hymans as an example of good seafood, you’ve never eaten good seafood, because Hymans doesn’t serve it. Hall is good and probably worth it for the the dining experience. I’m not fond of downstairs downtown because it’s so loud you can’t have a conversation. Same goes for Summerville. Best steak dining experience I’ve ever had is Bern’s in Tampa - beats any Chicago steakhouse, including those expense account ones.

If you want a great overall dining experience, great service, atmosphere, great food, a nice tablecloth, etc., then a place like Hall's is probably worth it.
But, if your main desire is a good steak and some tasty sides, and you are willing to accept a louder, busier atmosphere, fewer niceties and a lower level of service, then in my opinion, the difference between Outback/Texas Roadhouse and Hall's and similar places is absolutely not worth the difference in price.
I never leave Texas Roadhouse thinking, "Dang, that steak was terrible".

Been a few times since they are close. They are very good and sides are excellent but I don't think they sre worth what they charge. Service is excellent and second to none. Least the ones here in Charleston and and Summerville. To me their Sunday brunch is more worth the money.

The only Hall’s I’ve been to is the one in Charleston. We were coming back from Hilton Head and stopped in Charleston. The owner was there and stopped us as we were leaving to thank us for coming there to eat. He was super gracious and I told my husband that is how owners should be with their customers. That doesn’t happen often in my experience. I thought the food was really good. I’ve been to my fair share of nice restaurants and really my opinion is they are ALL overpriced. Each person has an opinion about how much they think is too much. We go to nice places for special occasions and we hit restaurant week places in Charlotte twice a year to try new restaurants we haven’t been to. My favorite way to get a steak at a restaurant is on a sizzling plate. Ruth’s Chris brings their steaks out like that although I’m not saying it’s the best place but I like the way they cook their steaks.

Dont know Halls, but I know food.
First question... Are the steaks wet or dry aged? Dry aged is going to almost triple the cost. Its an acquired taste, not being snotty, the flavor is different. If all you ever had is wet aged, it might not be for you. Its been described as a nutty flavor
Second.... Do they know their cuts. Ask them if the strip is from the ribeye side, or the sirloin side. If its from the sirloin, its got a tendon running right through the center. No good. Im not paying $20 for one. Ribeye, ask them how big is the star fat. Anything over ahalf inch means the cow wasnt finished properly and the fat isn't through the steak.
Third... Ask if they know how to cook Pittsburg style. If they dont know, theyre not all that. Side note, if you dont like your steak bloody, rare and mooing, dont get it this way. Just see if they know how.

If you are going to decide to let someone else cook for you, would you rather a crappy meal at Applebees or O’Charlie’s for like 85$ (which is the real rip off) or pay 200 or so… ask yourself that and you got your answer

I have only been to the one in Charleston (I live in the area) so I haven’t been to the one in Greenville yet. I wouldn’t go to the one in Nexton because I want the “full” experience of going downtown.
The service is amazing! The sides are really good. I prefer a little less fancy. My favorite restaurant in CHS is Husk.

All of my experiences have been worth the money. I’m not afraid to pay for exceptional food. Their Mahi is always on point. The steaks are always cooked to perfection. It’s dry aged beef. You get what you pay for. The service and ambiance are also part of the equation. It’s all subjective. Your palate may see a Big Mac as something delicious. I can tell the difference between dry age steak and plastic aged steak. I can tell the difference between choice, prime, and wagyu. That doesn’t mean anything to you. If it’s worth it to you, then it is. I’ve seen people that couldn’t appreciate fine dinning and had blown our palates who thought a Walmart choice steak was as good as wagyu beef tri-tip steaks.

Yes, wet aged ribeye(request heavily marbled), pepper jack corn,. Delish. The chop salad is also good. Finish with the caramel cake. Excellent meal. My wife calls it a”panty dropper” meal. Enough said

This is a really fun thread.
OneJedi® I like your comments. If you are ever in metro-NYC let's grab a meal! Tmail me!
A little background... I GM'd a restaurant for five years before the pandemic. But I was a corporate guy before that and every vacation that me and the missus took was about fine dining. I'm going to sound like a complete a-hole when I list some of the restaurants where I've dined, but so you understand that I am not just yakking... El Bulli, Joel Robuchon, French Laundry, Per Se, Gordon Ramsay (Royal Hospital Road), Per Se, Jean-Georges, Daniel, Eleven Madison Park, Fat Duck... etc.
I've probably eaten at twenty+ different Morton's over the years because some buddies and me go once or twice a year and, for thirty years, it has been a running joke to check off ones that we go to out of our normal circle. (They've closed so many I have probably been to half of them!) When my mom died and we had the funeral in Kentucky, I took the opportunity to go to the Louisville Morton's! Really!
So all of that said...
I cook a steak better than I can get in ANY restaurant. I don't think it is even difficult! I use a cast-iron griddle that I place on my grill. That thing gets to 600 easy. While there is some variance in beef, it is easy to get high quality beef. At restaurants, I only order things I can't do better, which means I go out less and less than ever.

Hall’s in Charleston is good, Greenville not so much. Neither can compare to the Chicago steakhouses like Gibsons and Chicago Chophouse. Berns in Tampa is also excellent and has the biggest wine cellar in the country. They used to give tours of their kitchen and wine cellar but not sure now.

Its not bad but if you are thinking of the one in Greenville it is not the best steak house in town.
If you want to impress a date or have a business dinner the combination of location and food and a well known name is there.
If you want to do a dinner for 50+ people downtown they can do it but if you have a group of 20-35 then minimum charges are going to make your dinner cost $200+ per person. Rick Erwin's and Soby's can do a great dinner for smaller groups at around $100/person including drinks.

In 6 minutes I can make you a steak better then what you'll get at the average or even higher end steak house. It's super simple. You need the steak, butter and whatever seasoning you like if any.
Put cast iron skillet on stone top. Put it on max heat. Throw steak with seasoning in. 2 minutes flip. 2 more minutes flip. This time add half the butter. 1 minute, flip and add rest of butter. After 1 minute (that's 6 minutes total) take steak off.
It'll be nice and charred on the outside but still juice as hell and red in the middle. Best steak you'll have at home.
Grilling steaks are just for people who think grilled is always better. Nope, not for steaks!

This is very subjective. I live within a mile of the Hall's in Summerville. We eat there about twice a month for supper, probably 3-4 times a month for brunch, and probably 3-4 times a month for lunch. Lunch and brunch are amazing and reasonably priced. Minus alcohol and the prices are similar to Outback or Longhorns. Dinner is different and is pretty pricey. Can I buy a nice steak and cook it myself for cheaper? Yes. Can I relax and not worry about ruining it? No. Can I send it back if something is wrong when I grill it? No. Just like in business, eating out is very similar, most people don't know the value of their time. Relaxing and enjoying a great meal with great company without worrying about procuring or preparing said meal, is worth a lot in my book. I can easily build my own house and save a ton of money but at what cost to my time? Could I have made more money than I saved by utilizing my time for some other endeavor? That's a question for each individual and everyone's answer is different. FYI: If you go to Hall's order the bourbon bread pudding for dessert. You can thank me later.
