I am pulling for Timme and Gonzaga to win it all.

they've been launching from long distance for much of the season

That was a designed play. (Edited to make score correct.)

Coach and players, after the game said they practice it every day.

My thoughts.

1. I doubt the plan was to take it from quite that far out.

2. Tie game I expected them to take it to the basket and hope UCLA would be afraid of fouling, or would foul the guy while taking the shot. Or he could dish it off to Timme.

3. I assume Few went with the 3 pointer since it was a play they practice all the time and there was still an opportunity for Timme, or someone else, to get the offensive rebound.

At any rate, that's why coaches get paid megabucks. Few is a hero. If the shot had been missed and UCLA won the game Few would be peppered with questions, "Why jack up a 28 footer? You were tied. Why not take it to the basket? If you had it to do all over again would you do it differently? Why can't you win the big games?"

One more comment about that game.

1.1 seconds left. Ball thrown to midcourt, guy catches it, passes it, guy catches it and shoots. Almost went in. Man, would there have been a controversy.

NO WAY can all that happen in 1.1 seconds. No way should that shot have been released before time expired.

I do believe they adjusted it to 1.4 seconds....

So maybe that was just enough?

Couple corrections:

Wasn’t nearly half court shot - more like 6 ft beyond the 3 line

Game wasn’t tied - UCLA was up by one after a 3 of their own. There was still 6 seconds or so to get an offensive rebound and the lead if it missed. This is obviously an overlooked option here on Tigernet as we seem to think it’s illegal to crash the boards after a miss.

UCLA actually had 1.4 seconds left when they inbounded which, if you allow a guy to catch it at half court, is plenty of time to quick pass to a guy moving towards the basket to get a decent shot/heave off. Well designed play or poorly defended - not sure.

Yep....Zags had owned the boards, he was free to launch and

they expected to have a good chance at a putback.

The final was 79-76 and the Gonzaga shot was definitely a 3 pt shot so I believe it was tied.

No, it was not tied. UCLA turned it over on the next possession, fouled Gonzaga, who made a free throw. Then UCLA had just over a second left for a prayer 3 that didn't go in.

Thanks bluejay - it’s pretty easy for folks to just watch the highlights and see the score literally displayed on the bottom of the screen but sometimes they just want to argue I guess?

I stand corrected. After you walked through it I realized I forgot about the foul and free throw. Thanks for clarifying.
