First time noticing the term, 'Firstborn of the death...'

From Job 18 when Bildad the Shuhite got another turn to speak:
"...11 Terrors shall make him afraid on every side, and shall drive him to his feet.
12 His strength shall be hungerbitten, and destruction shall be ready at his side.
13 It shall devour the strength of his skin: even the firstborn of death shall devour his strength.
14 His confidence shall be rooted out of his tabernacle, and it shall bring him to the king of terrors.
15 It shall dwell in his tabernacle, because it is none of his: brimstone shall be scattered upon his habitation.
16 His roots shall be dried up beneath, and above shall his branch be cut off.
17 His remembrance shall perish from the earth, and he shall have no name in the street.
18 He shall be driven from light into darkness, and chased out of the world.
19 He shall neither have son nor nephew among his people, nor any remaining in his dwellings.
20 They that come after him shall be astonied at his day, as they that went before were affrighted.
21 Surely such are the dwellings of the wicked, and this is the place of him that knoweth not God."
He's talking about Job and referred to as 'Job's friend.'
I sincerely hope I can show myself a better friend to folks here and around me than ole Bil.

Agree. It is easy to think the book is saying a thing is true, when it is not: Job's friends do a lot of the talking.

My first thought was about Lucifer who clearly had fallen before Adam and Eve.

I believe that Satan was the firstborn of death. Bil was telling Job 'The devil's gonna get you.'

Right. That was an interesting way of saying it. Hadnt seen that line before. Thanks. You well know that Jesus, post resurrection, is also called a firstborn. Occurs to me that the two stand on opposite sides of that act, one demanding independence, the other being dependent. They are not different in a mere good/bad sense, but are opposite in reaction to the fact God exists, each yielding their own children. Here we are.
It is interesting that Chapter 18, stand alone, seems basically true. The opening sentences are sort of funny: 'Dude, get over yourself.' But in the end God has heard enough. They're all three wrong, apparently. Some true things can be strung together to a wrong conclusion because - some people will love this - they start from the wrong premise. I would be interested in how you see this, but it seems to me that the beginning error of Job's friends was, "We can figure out how to be good." Job's was, "What did I do wrong?" God was like, "Y'all are clueless." Job listened.

I believe the 'friends,' are trying to get Job to confess sin. I think they are confused that they know Job so well but can't put their finger on why God is punishing him. That, from my understanding, is their goal.
I think they know Job was a God fearing man and they also are God fearing. Their respect for Job upsets them because if Job could fall so might they unless they identify Job's sin and avoid it.
Their attempts to reason with Job were the same as Job's wife's. Their attitude was the opposite. The friends wanted Job to confess and repent, his wife told him to curse God and die.
"Though He slay me yet will I trust in Him..." and we think we have problems.
I know I'm missing more than I'm getting out of this.

Ha, yes. Job's wife: "I've had enough of this, and you, if you really want to know. Been meaning to say that, and now seems like a good time."
The hardest place for me to start from is, "I know nothing, and have no claim to anything."

the three friends thought they were defending God's integrity by accusing Job of sin. We can look around and see suffering and blame that on the sins of those who suffer but in actuality, we all suffer.
Presuming that most of Job's friend led the 'Life of Riley,' under the Mosaic Covenant I believe they were trying to help God set Job right. I can't say I've never been that naive or spoke when both my lips and teeth forbid my tongue. I'm guilt of trying to help God when He doesn't ask or need my help.
I believe that is the very definition of 'The road to hell is paved with good intentions.'
There is gold in the book of Job. Tidbits which often lead to the motherlode.
