Dwight Clark trivia fact.......

We all know that Dwight Clark made "The Catch" for the 49ers against the Cowboys in the NFL.

But how many people know/remember the very difficult catch he made across the middle of the pass from Steve Fuller in the South Carolina game at W-B? It led to Jerry Butler making OUR "The Catch" against South Carolina on the very next play.

If I remember correctly, he caught it right between two defenders. And, of course, Butler's catch on the next play and then the shocked expressions on every Carolina fan.

Thank you for that memory. I had forgotten about that. He also made a huge across the middle catch and run TD to put Maryland away.

Dwight only had 33 catches in his Clemson career but he had some big ones among those. We grew up together in Charlotte and were in the same class at Clemson. Back in the day, Clemson had a JV team and I don't think Dwight really made it to varsity until our Junior year, which accounts for the low number of career catches.

He was such a good guy and sorely missed...

passed the ball 15 times in the game. Those were 3 important catches. It never gets old stealing the hope away from their fans.

Dwight was the man

I remember being an 8 year old who would wait outside the locker room for autographs after players had showered and heading home. Out walks Dwight Clark in a leather jacket, cigar in his mouth and Shawn Weatherly ( a future Ms. Universe) under his arm. Dude was living the life. I still have that program with his signature, Steve Fuller, Jerry Butler, Charlie Pell and many others.

He was always bigger than life, even in HS, and you couldn't help but smile and laugh when you were around him.

I was at both games. I was at The Masters one year with my son...cold day.

My son was wearing my 49ers 'varsity' jacket, wool w/leather sleeves that my wife had gotten me sometime in the late 80s.

Some guy walks up with his young son and asks "Are you a 49ers fan?" It was Dwight Clark. We talked for about 5 minutes.

I mentioned being at Maryland for that game and his catch. A big smile broke out and he said 'THAT was for the ACC Championship!"

I couldn't help but think that this guy has won Super bowls with Joe Montana and yet that ACCCG meant so much. Refreshing.

Dwight & Shawn.

We three were in line at ice cream store opp old P & A building and Dwight was still in an arm sling for an earlier shoulder injury..

and I mentioned I was from Charlotte too so a chat started. Then, when I came out of shop with my cream they had seated on a brick railing so the chat continued and I mentioned wife & I were flying up to the Md game.

Noticed then that Shawn was not happy with my going on so long so I moved on.

Yes..he was tall, handsome, wholesome, gracioys & friendly.

Oh, did you know he’s buried on farm of 49’ers owner Bartelo? with the original “TD” goalpost as his grave marker?!

Dwight Clark is buried at Ed DeBartolo's farm at Whitefish, Montana. I visit a good friend who lives in Whitefish every few years, and he has driven me around the beautiful farm a few times.

Read a quote from Jeff Bostic saying "I never saw Dwight drop a pass across the middle. I once asked him about that, and he answered, I know I'm about to get hit hard, so I might as well catch the pass."

I heard a guy say he was living in Dallas, and someone asked him where he was from. Upon hearing him reply that he was from Clemson, the guy just stared into space, and said "Dwight Clark!"

On a side note, my son's first and middle names are Dwight Clark.
