Devils Advocate: Why should we be better on "D" this year?
Aug 27, 2012, 1:27 PM
|
|
Other than the obvious that psycho-babble Steele is gone! Why should the guys playing now be vastly improved under a few weeks with Venables? No disrespect to Coach, but these guys gave up about 400 yards total offense last year & only 2 or 3 of them probably graded out at a "B" or better and they are gone.
I'm trying to ask a legit question with real answers, so no donkeys need to reply.

Playbooks are OK & I think small groups of drills are allowed was my thinking...so it's been a few weeks since August 1st. What do you believe differently?

yeah I think after 70 points you almost have to improve. Also I must say I'm glad Kevin isn't Steele here as DC

Clemson was a poor tackling team last year (imo)and if they can improve in that area I think that they will be better overall. I asked Coach V. if he was satisfied with the way his team tackled last week after the scrimmage game and he told me he was except for that day.I believe the improved linebacker play will help. One thing for sure, we can't afford to have key injuries early in the season. Hopefully we can develop that depth as the season progresses. GO TIGER D

1) Zone defense is much more effective at the college level than M2M, especially if you don't have truly elite CB's and rangy safeties.
2) LB play will be better and more physical just with Stephone Anthony in the permanent lineup. That's not mentioning improvement to Willard (consistent guy), and a guy like Lateek.
3) Our safeties have an opportunity to be more consistent than last year. Meeks, Brewer and Hall would make great plays some games, but looked lost the others. I think Veneable scheme will help fix some of that.

WIthout a doubt we are way better than Steele's D

From what I have heard so far is that instead of the D-line trying to penetrate all the time.... there job is to hold up the O-line and let the linebackers head hunt. Also there will not be as much man coverage which relates to not at many big plays over the top, or linebackers getting burned by TE's out of mere confusion. Also I think Coach V brings a better grasp on scrambling QB's with the enhanced LB play. Not as many high profile players as last year trying to make a big play. I think you have more of an overall team effort that knows that each player has a roll and an assignment to fulfill. Over all I believe you see and improved defense.

food for thought....the defensive coordinator Auburn just fired ran the same defense you guys are implementing....granted it can work...I just hope (at least after game 1 that is) that your guys are able to do it better then ours were....or that your coach is better at it....Ted Roof ran it and he was a bad coach for it IMO...kept the defensive line confused as ####

Zone D instead of Man

Works a lot better with our offense. Players will get a lot less worn out, and the Zone will help against running QBs better than man blitzing and giving up giant lanes.

My rebuttal is that Venables is a better DC

Also your D seemed to help you a lot in 2010 when you won it all. With a high powered offense an exceptional D is not really needed. Auburn's D in 2010 was outside of the top 30 if i remember correctly.

The only reason why our D was ranked so well is because no one could really block Fairley. If we didn't have him I think we would have lost at least 3 games even with Cam.
The wrath he unleashed made everyones jobs a lot easier. He was also one of the only ones that didn't do "gap control" he just busted through and wrecked things.
I'm not saying your D will be bad. BV is most likely a significantly better D coordinator then TR was.

But in 2010 it seemed that your team really went with the bend but don't break theory. They gave up yards and points but made teams work for it and when it was time to turn on the pressure they shut them down, Bama game comes to mind.

But your point is well taken. We'll just have to see how it goes and who can step up and play smart and hard.
What a poor answer. But it's the best we got.

By position group-

We'll be young on the Dline but should be solid. This group will see a small dropoff from the past few years. We probably don't have any real stars on this unit this year, unless Goodman comes on bigtime.
Our linebackers should be significantly improved. Tig Willard was solid last year. Stephone Anthony and Townsend should both be much improved with a year under their belts. Quandon Christian will probably still not be very good.
Our safeties should be very solid. They're both very experienced and fairly talented. Hall played all year with the knee injury last season; now that he's recovered he will look like a different player. Bashaud Breeland has the potential to be an NFL corner. I'm not sold on Harbison's coaching, so we'll see how much he gets out of these guys this year. The backups at corner don't appear to be ready for action at this point.
So there you have it, some reasons why we may be better and some reasons why we may struggle. We'll see how it plays out.
