Could this have anything to do with DJ's development?

Someone correct this for me wherever I have something wrong (source is Rivals, TigerNet rosters)

Since the start of the 2018 season, which is tied for the smallest QB room on the list, we’ve added no real surplus to the room despite the mass exodus of quality QBs between 2017-2020. This has resulted in a total net of -4 stars among the room since 2018.

This, in my opinion, resulted in DJ being the first quarterback (by my calculation) since Will Proctor to become the starter after never going through a quarterback competition to win the job. In my opinion this could have caused an issue with his development. Iron sharpens iron. I don’t think it’s crazy to think that a lack of true competition for the starting job could lead to struggles with adversity. Comments and Opinions welcome. What are your thoughts?

I think the answer is a bit more complicated than that. But it's an interesting take. I think DJU is going to make a good pro style QB, but I'm not sure his skillset translates well in Elliott's scheme. He's very stationary in the pocket and lacks the ability to extend plays when needed.

The consensus with "most" observers is this:

Poor O Line recruiting/play/development, as well as not recruiting enough numbers on the O Line. Let's face it: We were blatantly exposed on the O Line last year by O310 St. Anybody saying anything different isn't paying attention.

The lack of a true slot receiver with the explosiveness/elusiveness of an Amari Rodgers/Hunter Renfrow is a big factor.

The amazingly predictable, plain vanilla play calling this year has been a major factor. D coordinators are feasting on Elliott.

Poor blocking/catching by the WR's this year has been a major factor.

And, we need to file a missing persons report---has anybody seen our TE's this year? We almost never attack the MOF.

Oh I definitely agree that there is a myriad of problems with the offense as a whole and agree with all you listed. Just trying to get to the bottom of a 5* consensus QB's abilities or lack thereof making Tiger Fans wish we still had Kelly Bryant.

That's a long way to say he lacks position competition. But yes it does hurt him. He needs to know each day that he has to bring his best and improve. Having other QBs push for the spot in practice would be a huge benefit to DJ. But to highlight the over arching problem as stated in the other post response - the poor blocking by OL and WR is the single most negative impact on the productivity of the offense.

Very well done. The short answer is the fact that with over 2500 in the portal, it proves kids that are told they are saviors and the next great thing by some recruiting nut, will simply not sit on the bench. In the past a team could recruit a top QB each year and graduation or a jump to the NFL would keep the pipeline going but not any more. Having several 4 or 5 Star kids at the same position is just a thing of the past and then things hit the bottom when the kid that stays is not what he thought he was. We have to recruit lesser rated QB's along with the good ones and hope they will enjoy the college experience, learn and mature in the position and be loyal and stay.

I'd still like someone (more) in the know to address the stories about the coaches "tweaking" DJ's motion and footwork over the spring and summer and fall camp.

Really; I'm more inclined to think that maybe he isn't as good as advertised, or Tony Elliott has no idea how to ###### a game plan for D.J. because I have not seen much progress made between game 1 and game 7 from either guy.

That's an insult to the 1980s QBs. I think you have to go back 50 years to the early 1970s.

We can knit pick the various issues, but there is no getting around the most glaring issue this year - DJU is not looking ANYTHING like the QB who played in the ND game last year. It is up to our coaches to figure out why AND to fix it.

Both Desean Watson and Trevor Lawrence obtained off-season tutoring from regarded QB guros in keeping their form and techniques properly aligned before training camp started each new season. DJ has not and his form and technique have suffered tremendously. And Streeter is just not suited to bring him up to par! DJ must work with one of these nationally recognized QB guros before starting next season!!!!

One Take

My take on this subject tells me DJ, for whatever reason maybe baseball, skipped the Elite 11, Nike, Manning, etc. camps that most of the tip-top h.s. QB’s attend. Thes camps would have resulted in QB gurus like Dilfer identitying perceived shortcomings in DJ’s game. DJ would still have come to Clemson - but he would come in with a checklist of improvement opportunities to work on.

Conversely, C. Klubnik attended various QB canps and exceeded expectations at all the camps excelling in leadership and all the drills. Still, CK left the camps with identified areas of improvement. At 186 lbs, he is on the light side, but I expect him to gain weight over the next 10 months and push for the starting QB job early in 2022.

Dilfer had Dakaryon Joyner as one of his top 11 QBs in the country.

There have been other egregious (to use his word) errors on his part in his selections and evaluations at the position.

Can we move on from allowing his opinion to influence us?

Other errors? Have them handy?****
