Competing in multiple conferences depending on the sport?

Instead of a school competing in one specific conference in all sports, why couldn't a school compete in one conference in football, but a different one in other sports? As an example, Clemson might compete in the SEC in football but the ACC in all other sports. Notre Dame does this to an extent, although their football conference is "Independents". Also, Boston College competes in the "Hockey East" conference in hockey and the ACC in other sports [for obvious reasons].

This would require renegotiating TV deals, and the accountants would have to figure out allocation percentages for each school, but it's not an impossible task.
