Clemson wrestling and Title IX

Dec 8, 2005, 3:24 PM

I noticed you guys were chatting about it below.

While the athletic department sure made it seem like Title IX was the only reason we were dropping wrestling, the immediate reason at the time was we were facing some serious NCAA questions into several actions by coach Gil Sanchez.

In all likelihood, my guess is we would have dropped wrestling anyway, likely citing Title IX, although I'd like to hope we'd have kept it.

For those that don't remember/know, Sanchez resigned in mid-season in 1995, citing his desire to pursue other professional opportunities (If you don't know, those are often code words for "I quit before I was fired"). A grad assistant actually finished out the season as coach.

I'm not sure what all of the violations were, but the big one was wrestling an ineligible wrestler under the name of an injured wrestler at a meet in Virginia. That's a major NCAA infraction.

The University got rid of wrestling and by the fall, when the NCAA report came back, there was no program, so all of the violations went quietly away.

As for Sanchez, his past before Clemson was rather checkered. He later went on to become the wrestling coach at Battery Creek High School down in Beaufort where the school board hired him despite doing almost no research into his prior employment. I don't know if he's still there or not.

On a side note, one of the wrestlers involved in the hokie activites at Virginia was one of the first U.S. pilots killed in Afghanistan.

I had a soldier at FT Bragg that had received a scholarship offer from Clemson just before the program was disband. He was going to accept. He showed me that move when I was there.

Why not add Womens Wrestling?

Add bear, mud, some bikinis, PPV and we could pay for the West End Zone in one season.

Oops, beer not bear, although that might be interesting.***
