For kids, trying to stay under $400. Primarily used for web surfing and occasional word document.
Go!

Nook is okay for some stuff, cheap, durable.

You can do some word stuff, but with dubious quality.
But it's cheap. Much cheeper than $400.
When I say it's cheap, I mean 'inexpensive.'

from the adderall that you've spent $50k on throughout the duration of their lives because they're actually half-way normal.
Kids don't need computers or cellphones. When they get a drivers license, they should get a cell phone...a computer when they go to college and it's necessary.

Wait-you aren't a dad.
My kids are more active than you would even believe if I told you.
The reality today is that if they cannot use a computer before college it is unlikely they get into college.
My 3rd grader uses Ipads in her class. My 6th grader is given assignments that require a computer.
I hear ya, but not realistic.

and the Kindle is closer to $200. Both sport decently powerful hardware, and both have a lot of options. I love my Nexus 7. It's a pretty strong little machine and makes a great toy. If you have a data plan, you would do well the LTE version, unless you only want WIFI connections.
