Brent Venables Life Interview (2019)
https://clemson.rivals.com/news/four-star-hiller-clemson-is-a-dream-opportunity--1
“And then my dad would send another $400 a month for child support. There would be a check from the government every month for that. So $800 was our monthly income, plus whatever money my mom made from whatever odd job she was doing.“
“I had four stepdads growing up. The first one was very abusive, very physical. There was a lot of domestic violence. I don’t remember a whole lot about him other than you just did not want to screw up around him because you knew what was coming if you did.”
(About 2ND STEPAD JACK):
“When my mom finally kicked Jack out, he threatened to kill her. She had to go stay in a safe house for a few weeks. Meanwhile, my two brothers and I stayed with friends.”
“ I didn’t like the bad things, the verbal abuse and the alcohol. But I liked not having to worry about paying the bills or getting the electricity turned off and things of that nature.“
ONLY LITTLE STRONG INFLUENCE OF FAITH GROWING UP
“But we really liked going to the Baptist Sunday school and the buses would come. A different colored bus would come by and pick us boys up. But at the time, we really had no strong understanding of being a Christian, and what faith can mean to your life. So growing up, I was always intimidated by my friends’ families who made that a normal part of their lives just because I didn’t know much about it.“
((3rd STEPDAD JIM):
“So I got into my buddy’s car and we drove around until we found where Jim and my mom were, at a bar. I remember thinking that this was a moment that was way overdue. I remember telling myself in the car: “This is going to stop now. I’m big enough and old enough that I’m going to help my mom. I’m going to give her a way out.”
“I went into the bar and asked Jim if he put his hands on my mom. He said he did and asked me, ““What are you going to do about it?” So I beat him up in front of all his buddies. And that was pretty much the end of that relationship. My mom got in the car with me and we went home. She was just really quiet.“
In this interview Brent continues to talk about everything else about him like sports he played growing up and how else he got through times with his mom.

Peyton Houston is the 4-star QB who we just offered for the 2027 a class.
This is one thing he said about his OU visit
“They really believe in God here, and that’s what they build their program on,” Houston said. “That’s a big thing for me, I go to a Christian school. Knowing without God, I wouldn’t be in this position, going to a school with the same foundation is very big.”
I had never known any of this about Brent.
I kind of figured that faith was more strongly instilled in him through Dabo in his later life.
I see that he did have the influence of the church to some extent as a kid. But obviously not strict Catholic like his mother.
All said and done, it kind of brings a tear to my eye that this guy was able to go under the wing of a Saint, Dabo Swinney
We all also know about Dabo’s life growing up with his mom in Pelham. Was tough for him too.
This isn’t to force religion or anything
I’m just trying to show the inside world of how and why Brent runs things similarly to Dabo at Clemson while he’s at Oklahoma.

Thanks for posting.

They both talk about that long phone call they had when Dabo wanted to hire him. I am sure it was mostly football and program building but they may have shared some personal motivations too.

Excellent post - OP
Just one important point. IMO BV’s was a better DC than he is a HC. Dabo is above BV when it comes to being a HC and building and managing a solid successful program.
Go Tigers ! Great to have Dabo as our HC 🐅🐅 and believe he will win at least 1 more NC.

Wonder what basis you use to make this determination? He inherited a crap show at OU with all the transfers so how do you know until he is given a chance?

You don’t inherit a crap show at Oklahoma
Everything you need to win is right there in front of you.
Oklahoma won the BIG12 14 times
The next best was Texas with 4 times
10 more than the second best, and it was also Texas
Texas being the main obstacle to Oklahoma.
If Brent figures out somehow to flip that with recruiting and all that like the original post alluded to, then that would be the next step
Because Texas has obviously taken control in that relationship
Of course he needs to just worry about getting postseason opportunities
But any Oklahoma coach is already set up with way more than a lot of coaches elsewhere

Gawd I feel so sorry for him! As a woman I can say I would never subject my kids to people like that. There are so many women that do this and it’s wrong to have lousy men in and out of your house that don’t treat you or your kids right. It really damages the kids. However, I know I would have had help from family members if I needed it. She likely didn’t have that.

Yeah I’d say Brent is 100% an outlier statistic when it comes to later life success from a kid growing through that kind of life

at some point in his life. His passion for perfection, physical excellence and pure fight by way of attrition is ingrained in his mortar. Dudes’ built different.
Great interview.

I just saw him as a hard nosed football coach who had this insurmountable urge to win
And that’s what he was
I’ll say, I couldn’t have imagined 4 abusive stepdads though.
