Braves Trivia

The diminutive Nick Allen with his light bat and solid glove skills reminds me of a 90s era utility infielder for the Braves . . . Rafael Belliard. I looked up Belliard's career stats and came across this nugget:

In a career that spanned 17 seasons, Belliard had 2 career home runs. Even more amazing, those long balls came 10 years apart! I remember watching on TV and seeing him go deep in 1997. I didn't appreciate the unlikelihood of witnessing his feat at the time (I was 12). The only other homer he hit was in 1987.

Belliard was on first and the announcer compared him to something that fell out of the 1B's pocket. It was either that cheat Hrbek or John Kruk.

I've never seen a glove as good as Allen's. Back in the day, Luis Aparicio had a good glove.

out in a pivotal game of the 1991 World Series. Is that the reason for the "cheat" reference? Can't remember the Braves player.

Just looked it up. It was Ron Gant****

It was Ron Gant.

More Braves trivia : After baseball Ron Gant became a news anchor for the Fox affiliate in Atlanta.

More trivia. Most of those great Braves players of the early ‘90’s got their start with the Sumter Braves A affiliate in the ‘80’s. When Ron Gant ran into a major slump later in his career & the team wanted to send him to AAA to regain the magic, he asked to go back to Sumter.

Random trivia.

Joe Neikro had 1 career homerun. He hit it off of Phil Neikro.

Was it a knuckleball?

Prolly not. No one could hit (nor many catch) Phil’s knuckler. But when he got behind in the count, he had to come in with that batting practice fastball of his. He lost a lot of 1-0 & 2-1 games that way.
