the parking lot looked pretty much like this:

A parking lot full of cars that look exactly the same. Only differences were color shades and manufacturer badges. Horrific. Sure wasn't hard to spot my Wrangler amongst the sea of clone cars.
This article is a few years old, but interesting nonetheless. Why we live in a zombie-mobile world. https://medium.com/swlh/the-zombie-mobile-b03932ac971d The Zombie-mobile “Remember when we were kids? Each car looked so different, so unique unto itself. This is just oatmeal.” — Jerry Seinfeld What if I told you that after a hundred years of rigorous competition, car…

Or scared auto execs unwilling to take a chance on unique design.

of the buying public, someone who really wants to own a truck AND a sports car, but needs a station wagon to haul the kids around, and also wants to avoid the embarrassing stigma of driving a mini-van. These vehicles basically satisfy both wants and needs into a vehicle that isn't soul-castrating.
To satisfy consumers who couldn’t decide between a truck, car, van, or SUV, a new category was created. It is called the crossover. The crossover is the ultimate one-size-fits-all product. It is a truck without being a truck. It is a car without being a car. It is an SUV without being an SUV. It is a minivan without being a minivan. It is fast, yet fuel-efficient, yet powerful, yet roomy, yet safe. It is as if the car companies took the wish-list of every consumer type and frankensteined it all together in a single vehicle.[/i

There are only so many possible variations of the shape.

It's like sneakers: They all have the same general shape because they all have the same general purpose. There aren't many opportunities to distinguish themselves.
Cars' colors are another story. Most cars are either white, silver, gray, or black. In isolation, cars look really classy in those colors (or shades - are they even colors?), but in a sea of similarly toned vehicles they just disappear.
In 1997, Toyota introduced the 4th generation Camry. And they ruined it, in my opinion. It was exceptionally boring, but guess what? It quickly became the best selling car in America. Apparently dullness sells.
