Hey, my fellow trooper! I also was in VN during 1968-69 in Pleiku, II Corps. Lost a lot of good comrades. I was an artilleryman.

And, yes, visit Arlington National Cemetery by all means. Been there many times to see my buddies, e.g., Dave Hackworth - the highest decorated officer (still).

My older brother is buried there.

He was in Air Force ROTC at Clemson, majored in Chem Eng, Graduated with a 4.0. Got his Masters in aerospace
sciences and his PhD in astro Physics at the Sandia weapons lab in Albuquerque. He died in 2004 and is interred in a section of ANC overlooking the Pentagon. He worked there.

Arlington is magical...

1950's, and several times since, including taking my son and oldest grandson. We, also, have family buried there.

Even among the crowds, there was a reverent silence, literally whispers, which was moving in of itself.

I suppose for all of us who are Veterans, the poignancy of what the cemetery represents is especially memorable. May those who served and those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation rest in peace, and may we always pay tribute to their sacred honor.

Agree. And make sure to see the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

I was in attendance for several burials of KIA from Afghanistan and Iraq when working in DC. Glad that I was not part of the official party for those and could stand in the back and not have to be up there with the crying mom, dad, siblings, wife and young kids.

One time that I couldn't stand in back I had the honor to be the escort for a young Army Air Force bomber pilot who went missing when his aircraft (B-26?) went down in New Guinea (i think) during WWII, only to be found decades later. Picked him up planeside at Dulles and was there to make sure that he got settled at the funeral home and that all arrangements were in order. Then I escorted a niece for the duration taking her where she needed to go and making sure she got to her seat for the burial. The Old Guard took care of the pilot from the funeral home. It was an honor to help, but I was selfishly glad that it wasn't a recent casualty and I wasn't escorting a close family member. It's been a while, but if I remember correctly, the pilot's son was there to receive the folded flag. A retired Navy admiral who never knew his dad. It had been decades since that plane went down but it was a moving experience from the service at the Ft Meyer chapel to seeing the casket loaded on the horse-drawn Caisson and then the burial itself. All done with the utmost care and professionalism.

Several years later I got detailed to be OIC of a burial detail for an old retiree at a smaller regional military cemetery. “On behalf of the President of the United States, the United States Army, and a grateful Nation, please accept this flag as a symbol of our appreciation for your loved one's honorable and faithful service.”

Glad that it was a retiree who lived a long life and that there wasn't a bunch of young kids and a lot of crying for that one.

I'm eternally grateful that I never had to be the guy knocking on someones door out of the blue to break the news...
