ACC vs SEC academics and Barker

May 11, 2010, 1:52 PM

Something no one is really talking about is that in academic rankings (which whether you agree with or not everyone knows is barkers motivating factor). The acc is far more prestigious than the SEC in academics Infact of the major conferences the ACC is the most prestigious. Every ACC school is in the top 100 schools in the country except for FSU which is 102. Compare that to only four schools in the SEC making the top 100. I could see this being a factor as Barker wants clemson to only associate us with top academic universities

Duke 10
Vanderbilt 17
UVA 24
UNC 28
Wake 28
BC 34
Ga Tech 35
Florida 47
Miami 50
Maryland 53
UGA 58
Clemson 61
NCSU 88
VT 88
Alabama 96

yes i know some are ties and that is how they are listed in US news and world report. Anyone else think this could play a role in what happens?

absolutely -- this is a huge consideration ****

Barker will see $$$$$ which he short on right now

May 11, 2010, 1:55 PM

10% of $100 is greater than that of $10, apply this principle to the percentage the school gets from our AD now compared to what it would be. Also, if the AD starts operating in big surpluses, I wouldnt be surprise to see the school increase the percentage.

So Clemson goes from 9th in its league to 4th !?!?!

May 11, 2010, 2:04 PM

I don't believe Barker would object to that ;)

Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.

Exactly, and the ACC is always going to look down its nose

at Clemson academics. So if you stay in a poached ACC, you have stayed in a league that will then have Cincy, Louisville, South Florida, etc.

Not so great an academic league any more, your football is gone forever and you stayed to support tobacco roads basketball, while they look down on you in basketball and football.

sorry i meant to make that point too. Do you think barker would rather stay near the middle to bottom of the ACC or in the top 4th of the new SEC..or will money be the ultimate deciding factor

Serious question.

May 11, 2010, 2:14 PM

Unless you are in the Big-10 and get to share in the $6 Billion in research dollars held by the CIC, what difference does it make whether you are in a strong academic conference or not? USC and Clemson share more research dollars than does Clemson and any of the ACC schools. Most universities except for those in the Ivy League, Big 10 and perhaps the PAC-10 stand on their own in generating research funds and academic status.

Your Character is what you do when no one is watching.

Maybe Barker thinks Clemson will improve by association

May 11, 2010, 2:25 PM

but to my knowledge being in the ACC doesn't do anything to help Clemson achieve its goal of being a top 20 public university. Clemson is still going to make that a priority regardles of what league it happes to particupate so from that standpoint I agree with you. I think the bigger issue with Barker may be joining a league that is perceived as placing more emphasis on athletics than academics or even an equal balance of athletics and academics.

If academics didn't matter.....

May 11, 2010, 2:44 PM

the paticipants wouldn't be called "student"-athletes and they would not be required to maintain their academic elibibility in order to play.

As a former student-athlete at Clemson I can tell you that my education was the bigger priority for me.

doesn't have anything to do with what conference you play in

May 11, 2010, 3:33 PM

of course academics are the most important, but it has zero to do with what teams you play

FSU not in top 100- shocking

May 11, 2010, 2:38 PM

figured they would cheat to get there like they do at everything else.

How can you say that with a straight face Mr. Barker?***

With this explanation, do you think we can get in the Ivy League?
