MLB History April 19 What happened on this day ??

1965 - The original Astrodome ceiling is painted because the sun’s glare makes fielding fly balls hazardous. This will cause the grass to die and lead to the installation of Astroturf for next season.

1981 - The Oakland Athletics set a modern-day record for the most consecutive wins to start a season as they moved to 11-0 with a 6-1 victory over the Mariners. The 1982 Braves will break the record by beginning the season with 13 consecutive victories.

Some Astro-Turf History

… AstroTurf® was originally designed as an urban playing surface meant to replace the concrete and brick that covered the recreation areas in city schoolyards

from the University of Washington created synthetic turf, which he called “AstroTurf,” to help protect his athletes from injuries on wet and muddy fieldsMay 17, 2021 ( I am not sure that worked out lol )

How Ironic: why was Astro turf phased out by NFL

Because Astroturf was so hard underneath, it caused many devastating injuries, especially to the knees, and shortened if not ruined many careers.

The original AstroTurf brand product was invented by James M. Faria and Robert T. Wright at Monsanto. The original, experimental installation was inside the Waughhtel-Howe Field House at the Moses Brown School in Providence, Rhode Island in 1964.

It can contaminate the soil and shed microplastics into the environment which are harmful to living beings; Heat and soil contamination harm earthworms, who are vital for a healthy garden; It can make flooding worse as it doesn't provide an absorbant surface to regulate rainfall.
