Texas Tiger Blood, developed in the Lone Star state.
He has been associated with several good programs in Texas.
Clemson is a big opportunity for Garrett Riley, and he knows realizes that Clemson is special.

He will be successful and stay with Clemson until the RIGHT Head Coach opportunity comes along.
Garrett can talk to Chad Morris and Jeff Scott about jumping into the wrong opportunities.

Go Tigers, Beat Dook!

Odd question for a thread about the OC. Especially since he has already answered the question

Neff pulled the trigger on Monte and EB certainly seems to have the baseball team back on the right track.

Yes we lost a few head scratchers in basketball, but we had a very good team. Third in the ACC, made the semi finals of the ACC Tournament, and beat NC State, who went to the dance in front of us, 3 times by an average of more than 20 points. I am not a Coach Brownell fan, but I think that expectations of more than we did last year are unrealistic. I am not saying that I would not like to have higher expectations in the future, but in a 1 year bubble, there was no reason to fire Coach Brownell just because the committee screwed us.

"man, it's just different here"

But some TNetters would like us to do it just like everyone else.

This article makes me proud to be a Clemson man. Dabo wanted to treat Streeter well, which is the right thing to do. THAT is what makes us different: it's not simply a business (it is that), but about people.

We're blessed to have Dabo.

I would maybe bet that Streeter's opinion of being replaced after just a season wasn't very nice or agreeable to what was happening with his livelihood. I actually believe he had some choice words for all involved, and he was paid well to just go without his feelings being known to the public.

It is my opinion that Dabo done what must have been done, and that was to correct the mistake that he made by acting to quick bc Tony made other plans that didn't include Clemson. It's also my personal opinion that acted to quick with replacing BV and Tony, and if the D doesn't perform as well as it did with BV especially with all the talent that Goodwin has, there will be a change or changes made to correct that hire also....

You're welcome to your wrong opinion

The defense underperformed because the offense was so woeful last year. We could not play complementary football. Part of what made D under BV so good was that the O was so good. That wasn't the case either of the last two years.

Cade and DJ both noted that the offense was very complex under Streeter. The buck stops at Streeter, and ultimately at Dabo.

I suspect Brandon will learn from that and go on to become one of the best in the business. And he was compensated very well for his efforts.

The article states that treating Streeter well was one of the -- if not THE -- main consideration in timing and process.

So maybe Neff and Dabo are misleading us.

Or maybe you're wrong.

Definitely compensated

I'm not sure it was "hush money," so to speak, but absolutely we're still paying Coach Streeter his full salary by nature of the law & the contract he signed, for what it's worth (& arguably rightly so, going by AD Neff's comments here as well).

I'm now way more curious if AD Neff was instead involved in targeting Coach Riley long before Coach Swinney outright.

Consider it; if that's the case, Neff deserves an absolute deluge of credit. Not to take anything away from Coach Swinney, but that's an athletic director going up and above the standard, for sure.

Alas, we don't KNOW if that's the case as it wasn't mentioned in this interview, but it does seem more likely now than Coach Swinney only coincidentally meeting Riley at a meeting he was a day late to & basically hiring him on the spot (From both sides).

On the same page

Jun 26, 2023, 6:49 PM [ in reply to "man, it's just different here" ]

AD Neff spoke a bit about he & Coach Swinney (& Pres. Clements) are on the same page, which makes it seem way more interesting.

For example, that makes it clear Neff would have supported keeping Coach Streeter for at least one more season if Coach Riley hadn't signed on to join Clemson almost immediately after a near-chance meeting at the annual coaches meeting. Coach Swinney has been explicit about it, & that there were no other candidates at the time.

With that said, I have to wonder if AD Neff had Riley on the hook, so to speak, for the 2024 season if not for this 2023 season. I suppose we'll never know, but it's what I was hoping to find anything about from this interview because it was such a singular hire and for the top-rated OC in the entire sport, & all in an extremely short timespan.

Streeter moved into a situation where it is all about business, and they have no qualms about bending a rule, or several, along the way. I think we got a great OC now, but I do hope Streeter has success down the road, but not in Athens. I can't bring myself to stoop to pulling for them.

Dabo and I went fishing.

The conversation on the lake was between Dabo and me.

You’re welcome Neff

Details?

In all sincerity, I was hoping to learn a lot more about the hire.

From what I understand after the intro PC at the CAB back in January, Coach Swinney & Coach Riley hadn't met before the hire but instead ran "into each other" at the annual Coaches Association meeting, which Coach Riley was a day late for due to his TCU team being in the national title game (& consequently if he hadn't shown up they wouldn't have met & therefore he wouldn't have been hired?).

This interview makes it sound like AD Neff participated in hiring Coach Riley, but that's not uncommon, is it? I'd like to think it's more uncommon for the AD to NOT participate, but I digress; I was more curious if the two of them had met or spoken to each other before since Riley & Swinney hadn't.

I was also sincerely curious if Neff was on the same page as Coach Swinney to keep Coach Streeter if Riley didn't take the job essentially sight-unseen without having ever visited Clemson & only having just met Coach Swinney, know what I mean?

It just felt more generic I guess is all & I'm still curious on the specifics because of the timing & the consequence (ex., had Streeter gotten another year from Riley not initially immediately signing on with Clemson, would Riley not have met with everyone here at Clemson in the meantime during 2023 to make a decision later). I suppose we'll never know, but still, I'll always be curious & I'm not sure why it wasn't brought up in this incredibly unique case.

Bottom line, home run hire & we get to see what Coach Riley can do with essentially the same players for at least this 2023 season, which is relentlessly exciting in its own bubble.

Been around a lot of AD’s. Never read anything like this commenting on their role in such significant event. Neff insecure? Or check out what I did? I don’t know. Struck me very peculiar such detail.

I think Neff had to be more involved due to the timing. Dabo and Staff preparing for big bowl game, TCU preparation for their championship run and not trying to alarm either Brandon nor TCU staff. I think Dabo made the decision to move on before the ACCCG but wanted to treat Brandon with respect. That said, Dabo probably got the negotiations started and left the $$$ to Neff.

I feel like the decision was made after the Orange Bowl. I believe they have a season recap meeting and Dabo probably wasn’t pleased at Cade’s development. Do you think he would have fired Streeter if we won the Orange Bowl?

Yes I do! You could tell Dabo wasn't his usual self all year. The frustration was getting to him and you could see it in pressers with how short he was on comments, very un-Dabo like. He was acting more like Saban. Since the hire of GR, you can see the renewed vigor in Dabo. BS was gone after the Coot loss.

He definitely wasn’t his usual self last season. Really excited to see what Riley does to the offense this year. It’s been a rough couple of years from that standpoint.
