Coach Swinney - A Path Forward with Respect, Support & Contingencies

1. Clemson Football will hire a GM who reports to AD G. Neff with a dotted line to top boosters. 2. The Clemson Football GM will hire a Transfer Portal/NIL Director who reports to him. 3. Dabo Swinney will be given the opportunity to provide input on OC and DC positions, new staff hires, high school and portal recruits. The Clemson Football GM and G. Neff will also have a vote. 4. The OC and DC will be authorized to hire their own staffs and will have 100% responsibility for schemes, formations, play calls and staff personnel decisions. 5. A Special Teams coordinator will be hired with comparable authorizations & responsibilities. 6. If Coach Swinney objects to the established Transfer Portal/NIL/Management approach, he and his agent will be given the opportunity to quietly assess outside coaching opportunities in a mutually respectful manner with no contract buyout or a negotiated buyout which loosely reflects any loss of income.
Coach Swinney and his outstanding record of success deserves great respect. And no doubt at the right time, a statue will be erected in his honor as well as other well-deserved honors & recognitions. In a similar vein, Clemson University and its alumni, boosters and fans deserve respect and a HC who will aggressively build the program in a manner that optimizes wins, character and success.
Coach Swinney will have to make a personal decision if he wishes to work within an established framework with cognizance that Ryan Day, Tony Elliott and other HC's have given up play calling & other coaching responsibilities to focus on the larger elements of football program leadership, organization, recruiting and success. There is a win-win out there with Coach Swinney, AD Neff, Pres. Clements, the BOT's, and top boosters negotiating and working together to achieve the next chapter of Clemson's success.

Jordan Sorrells. No doubt a smart guy. Works for Coach Swinney I believe in current GM role. IMHO an independent GM would reduce the number of Coach Swinney reports and return his focus to football. Coach is overwhelmed by micromanaging every aspect of the program. It's too much for anyone.

A growing trend ...

Texas Tech GM James Blanchard, Stanford GM Andrew Luck, and California GM Ron Rivera (two-time NFL Coach of the Year) are the tip of the spear among at least 15 current university GM's -- a growing trend that Clemson and Mr. Neff and others will have to manage unique to the Clemson perspective.

This is nice and all, but requires Neff growing a pair instead of being Dabos overpaid lackey

If we put all of that in place, I’m not sure you need a HC. It becomes HC by committee.

My take is it will free Dabo up to be the leader of the Football Program with a seasoned business professional like a Howie Roseman, who holds the title of Executive Vice President of Football Operations with the Philadelphia Eagles, and is known for his strategic roster building and decision-making. Coach is dealing with a lot of family and personal associates who too often can be more of a burden than a blessing.
A Howie Roseman-type GM could be the bad guy and run the business interference Dabo needs to get the minutiae in line so Coach can return to focusing on recruiting, leadership and motivation before the days of NIL and Portal Transfers.

Completely agree with this plan/strategy but I do not see Dabo agreeing to anything where he would have to give some control and have to answer to a GM. He is able to run everything his way now, hire who he wants, and micro-manage everything. He sees Clemson Football as his and won’t let it go unless his hand is forced and they will have to buy him out.
I honestly think he believes he is entitled to turn the program into a non-profit type organization. He built it and he will drive it into the ground in order to keep the gravy train going.

You make a valid point LCTiger97 ... What you say is true, but HC responsibilities have grown exponentially. And Coach might welcome some professional balance and business subject matter expertise allowing him to return to the business of football.

I believe that working the portal takes a lot more work than high school recruiting, and more work than the staff wants to put into it.
