People don't realize how diverse Chemical Engineering is without made up government quotas.

We don't need quotas. We need a level playing field.

Almost 70% of scientists and engineers employed in the U.S. are white. As the U.S. is growing more diverse, the engineering field is not following suit. For example, Hispanic individuals account for only 6% of workers in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) occupations, although they make up 15% of U.S. adults. Black individuals make up 5% of the STEM world, but 12% of the total U.S. population aged 21 and older. Women account for only 15% of the engineering workforce, but make up 51% of the total U.S. population.

The fact that a population of people in a group is not balanced equivalently with the population of the US does not indicate there is a problem that needs to be fixed. Not every field, every job, every subgroup, every title, every company will or should have the same distribution of demographics as everyone else. And does not mean the playing field is not level.

Where in this thread did anyone assume women or people of color are not qualified? Did you ever think maybe, just maybe, there are not enough qualified women interested in Engineering to make up 51% of the workforce? Just like there are not enough qualified men that want to be nurses to make up 49% of that workforce?

Your premise is asinine and your "show me facts" rebuttals is just a smokescreen to hide from the obvious evidence that you have no earthly clue what you are trying to say.

Using the NFL/NBA as an argument against DEI is a bad comparison. Those leagues only look like pure meritocracies because they’re built on strict, socialist-style structures that level the playing field: drafts to allocate talent fairly, salary caps, publicly transparent salaries, strict limits on practice hours, standardized schedules, collective bargaining agreements, revenue sharing, anti-tampering and fully transparent performance metrics (every play, every stat). These safeguards keep one or two organizations from hoarding all the advantages. Most private companies don’t have anything like that—compensation, hiring decisions, and evaluations are opaque and subjective, and opportunities often depend on who you know. That’s why DEI policies exist: to put some guardrails in place where none naturally exist.

And by setting aside a certain number of jobs for these groups whether they are qualified or not is the answer? I will never agree that is the right way. Hire the most qualified regardless and your company will be better in the long run! I da mn sure don't want a DEI hire flying my plane just because he/she were given the job just to satisfy a quota!

They don’t have to use it because they level the playing field with so many other socialist concepts like salary minimums, salary caps, anti-tampering policies, drafts, etc. if you want the US to adopt those same policies in the private sector, I think everyone would agree that DEI is redundant.

But most interviews aren’t a blind qualifications test. Most are a social interaction.

Many studies show that randomly selecting candidates for a position is equal to or better long term than hiring managers attempting to select the most qualified individual. If you use a traditional interview process, you don’t get the most qualified person, you get the best interviewer. Was the kind that won student president in your school the right person or just the most popular? Probably more people would say it was just most popular, but surely not all the time.

The misunderstanding of DEI by the right aisle is that there has to be a villain in this story in order for there to be a person that requires help. But the villain isn’t a person it’s a feature of human biology called bias, which is an incredibly powerful tool and boon to humans, it’s what allows us to solve highly complicated issues with a small and novel data set. but it does have to be checked in specific situations. The same way you wouldn’t want use buck shot to hunt dove, right tool for the right job and all that.

If you don’t believe people unintentionally hire based on things like race and gender then just read about the blind audition process of the American orchestra. It’s probably the most interesting intersection of this debate. Blind auditions so that selections would be made in merit alone. This significantly increased female representation in orchestra especially male dominated sections like brass as the policy was adopted, but strangely has not done much to improve racial representation. Quite the riddle, but pretty strong support that implicit bias exists and the road to #### may be paved with good intentions. The irony is that some progressives want to remove the blind audition because it will allow a more quota driven audition process. And I really hate that idea! The only reason DEI is needed is because most interviews don’t have a solution as easy as a performance behind a screen to help us manage our biases and find the right candidate. In a situation where that is possible, of course you should use it!

Anyway, rant over.

First, effective DEI is about addressing implicit bias in the selection process was, not leveling salaries. But if that is your smoking gun, that difference can be explained by educational level, but when held the same ie Indians with a Bachelor degree compared to white colleagues with a bachelor degree, the average Indian employee earns slightly less. The percentage of Indians with an advanced degree is just that much higher. And they are discriminated against more in the college admissions process, maybe something like DEI could help address that.

Mildly interesting, but minimal differences between whites and Indians can be explained by a variety of factors besides race, like communication skills, that can be a real requirement for certain jobs. It is not necessarily their skin color. But the bigger elephant in the room is; why can't other racial groups attain the same academic and professional success that Indians and Asians have achieved?
