SNAP: everyone complains about it - nobody really wants to reform it
Wife went on Amazon to order some Lavazza espresso. (It’s one of those over-priced coffees that we get for company during the upcoming holidays.)
Sure enough, this stuff can be purchased with SNAP EBT cards.
Some combination of bureaucrats and politicians gets bribed ah er I mean ‘convinced’ that expensive luxuries are an entitlement for people who can’t afford to buy enough food to keep them and their families nourished.
Yet, there are millions of hard working families who are not in SNAP benefits who wouldn’t dream of wasting their own hard earned money on Lavazza espresso instead of buying a nice chicken or Turkey for the family meal.

use what limited SNAP benefits they have on Lavazza espresso or caviar or lobster tails? You think that if somebody can, then they will, even if it makes no sense whatsoever to do so? Man, those poor people are really dumb, aren't they? Us smart not-poor people know how stupid it would be to do something like that.

trip at the Circle-K. She bought a 12-pack of Dr. Pepper - which was $9.99 (because we were at a connivence store). Put it on her EBT.
I had just left the Food Lion (next door) where the 12-packs were on sale for $3.99. (Regular price was $5.99). It does seem like there should be a way to encourage these folks to be good stewards of the money they are given.
But - yes - we don't know for certain folks are buying Lavazza espresso just because they can.

I mean, mine wasn't anecdotal.

I'm not claiming nobody has ever bought Lavazza espresso with SNAP, but I seriously doubt it's a big enough issue to spend literally any seconds of a given day worrying about.

Those who provide the funds to charitable causes get to (or should get to) dictate the uses for which the funds may be spent.
It’s like helping out the bum outside of the convenience store who asks for money. Wanna help him? Then buy him a slice of pizza and a bottle of water or fruit juice. Don’t give him money or buy him beer.
The attitude that ‘details are not worth worrying about’ is prevalent upon people who are generous with other people’s money.
Most who have earned their own money and are doing well financially ‘worry’ about the details.
The above is why nobody in the government cares about the details. After all, it’s not the bureaucrats & politicians that earned the money. Why should THEY worry?

You think this coffee is an "expensive luxury"?

I'm looking at a 30 pack now for $34. LOL wut? And the one that says it's SNAP eligible is like $25.
Why do all you people void of empathy want anyone on SNAP to only be able to eat swill and garbage?
RTD when company comes over, "Baby, bring out that luxury $25 coffee!"

food - and someone gave me money to buy food, I sure as heck wouldn't spend it on coffee. Seems wasteful. And no - I don't think these folks should have to eat garbage.
Quick edit: Heck - I don't even buy coffee pods now because I think they're too expensive.

Financial details don’t matter to people who aren’t good with money.
Well run charities carefully limit the types of expenditures that they make with the donations that they get. SNAP is a de facto charitable program.
Eliminate luxuries like high priced brands of K-cup coffee and tea would be smart. Those people who have so much money that they can burn SNAP money on things like that are getting too much SNAP money.
Arguing that denying SNAP recipients Lavazza coffee is akin to forcing them to eat swill and garbage is Reason 1 billion why leftists cannot be trusted with taxpayer money.

Reforming SNAP and other aid programs

Is something that Republicans aren’t entirely wrong about, but as usual the way you guys want to “reform” it is entirely wrong.
But it would be nice if Republicans now were just Bill Clinton Democrats.

I agree. Your wife should start buying great value brand. No cream or sugar, straight black. Donate the difference in price between that and her fancy coffee to charity.

Nah, you are the one who wants those who are in the dole to use SNAP benefits for luxury items.
If it is so important to you for the semi-indigent to have the money to buy luxuries in addition to necessities, then do your part.
Donate your inherited money to the Democrat Party and stipulate that all the money go to SNAP beneficiaries. You can be sure that the Democrats will do as you say and give it all to the SNAP people. Trust them … they told you to.
