Frans got a new pupper last week, name's Johnny Utah.

I stopped by to meet him for the first time yesterday on my way to a rum tasting event (also real effin' cool, might share some of that in another post). Another friend stopped by with his dog, Finley, who is an adult Chow/Lab kinda mix, to play with 12 week old Johnny Utah and continue the socialization process. Pretty remarkable little pup, hasn't had a single accident in the house--like he was readymade housebroken. That doesn't really happen.
Anyway, Finley found this puppy to be annoying and was generally trying to get away from this thing nipping at his hindlegs and tail. But then maybe 10 minutes in, Johnny Utah starts doing zoomies around the yard, and Finley is like "aight, I can get down with this" and chased Utah around the yard some. This is like a 75 lb dog that would occasionally catch an 8 lb dog and give him a pretty good roll and tumble. Dogs doing dog things.
I'm about to leave to go drink rum, and as I'm walking out of the backyard gate, Johnny Utah starts yelping like crazy. Nobody saw for sure what happened, but Finley probably stepped on him while they were sprinting around. Friend picks him up, and the yelping doesn't stop for another full 2 minutes. Was favoring his left front leg, and we're like "uhhh, shit...is it broken?" X-ray at emergency vet, sure is. They kept him overnight and I think they're doing surgery today.
We're a pretty tightknit group of friends, and I'm just an outside observer in this case since I don't have a dog in this fight (you see what I did there and you appreciate it), but...would you have any expectations if you were Utah's owner? Probably looking at a couple grand to fix his broken wing. Or just dogs being dogs? I think I'm leaning towards the latter. Would be a little different if other friend just showed up with his dog, instead of being invited to bring his dog over.
Here's Johnny Utah at the vet's office this morning:
He ended up blowing out his knee in the Rose Bowl sooner than expected, so I guess his FBI career is going to be fast-tracked.

anyone other than puppy owner is responsible for puppy. If he knew puppy was playing with much bigger dog and was OK with it, then it's his dog to fix.

I can't imagine asking a friend to shell out to help pay for that, especially if you invited him over to help socialize your dog. Stuff happens.

Young, dumb, and full of ###.
Sounds like dogs doing dog things. I'd be reluctant to let a puppy roughhouse with a 75 pound dog.

But my pup was clipped by a car years ago. We were new to the area so took him to the bougie emergency vet in Brentwood. $3k later he had a plate in his leg.
A couple weeks later, I discover that the guy I had been coaching lacrosse with was a vet, and he tells me “dude, I could have fixed that for $300.”
Point being, your friend should avoid the Charleston-fabulous vets. Drive an hour and find a good country vet and save a couple thou.

We stupidly used to think "a vet is a vet", assuming they would all be similarly priced....Couldn't be further from the truth.

Owners gotta watch their dogs too though. Probably one of those like split second accidents that no way could have been avoided, but if every juan saw it then it's clear what happened.

what I've always been told. They won't learn it well if its too long. Plus it's a PITA to say when you call them.

The most important criteria for choosing a dog's name is

you must imagine yourself screaming this dogs name at full volume as you wander around your neighborhood looking for said dog when they inevitably wander away at some point.
How crazy will you appear to your neighbors? Low crazy factor = good dog name. High crazy factor = poor dog name.

He led a long life…
In all seriousness I had to get surgery for one of my dogs last year on a torn ligament in her leg. Shiat costed over 3 grand! I told the wife we shouldn’t do the surgery but she wasn’t having that talk.
