This movie works so well for two reasons. 1. The casting was

perfect. Burt in his prime as the wise-cracking Southern rebel, Sally is almost too damm cute, Jerry Reed with the sing-along song, and Gleason should've won a freaking Oscar for his role...
b. The movie doesn't try to do too much. It's just all fun, period. It doesn't even pretend to have any deep meaning...

Yep that's an all time classic. Simple premise - get beer.
Pure fun and I agree, perfect casting. Every character is perfect. Right down to the stupid SIL and cross county sherriff.
