You know what lasted longer than the Confederacy ?

Jun 14, 2020, 1:24 PM

The Gamecocks “one for the thumb” win streak over us.

Always funny to see people wax poetic on about “heritage” regarding something that last 4 years and 3 months.

You a Yankee by birth. Southerners regard that period as heritage.

I view it as our great mistake.

As a seventh generation South Carolinian, we would’ve been much better not to put our trust in a vain, self-centered, a-hole like Jefferson Davis. Hmmmm, sounds like someone we know today too.

Speak for yourself there on the southerners thing. I have been a white southerner all my life and granted it took me some time to grasp this concept but those 4 years and whatever months are just a period in time. An awful and tragic period of time for many many people. But that four years is tiny in the history of South Carolina and I refuse to accept some flag from.thst small period in time to outshine what our state has been able to accomplish. When coach Swinney speaks the best is yet to come when related to my states journey we have finally begun to do some great things and more and even better things are on their way. So speak for yourself. I am a southerner too and do NOT feel the way you do right now. I do hope one day you will understand and change as well.

Ummm...no. It may have lasted longer than the " War of Northern Aggression", but it certainly didnt last longer than something that still exists today. Its a way of life that no yankee would understand. And no, racism isnt a part of it

Yes it is based on racism.

No. A few people who have outwardly expressed themselves, from more than 150 years ago, do not represent the entire southern Heritage. Stop trying to define me by your own frivolity. My heritage is based on family and a way of life that no yankee seems to understand. And that is through experience. Go find something better to do.

My man, I was born and raised in Easley. My dad also refers to the Civil War as the "War of Northern Aggression" as you do. I know exactly what "Southern heritage" means. It means your ancestors fought for the right to own black people as property. It's my heritage too; my great-great-great grandfather and four of his brothers died in the war. Two of them died at Chancellorsville under Stonewall Jackson. The difference between me and people who think like you, including my own father, is that I've acknowledged they were on the wrong side of the fight, and I'm working to right their wrongs.

It is hard to read the articles of secession of the southern states and conclude that they did not secede because of slavery. Look them up for each state, read them, and count how many times "slave" or "slavery" is used. It is clear to me that the confederacy was formed to protect the institution of slavery. Yes, they couched it in "states rights" language, but again, they used that language to protect the institution of owning people as property that can be treated however the "owner" wanted. It is what it is, in my opinion. We should deal with it honestly. I am 52; I was born in TN, grew up in SC and have lived my entire adult life in NC. While I do love certain southern traditions, it is impossible for me to look at the facts of the birth of the confederacy and conclude that it was not based on slavery and therefore it is a part of my heritage that I choose not to honor. It is a stain on our history.

But I’ve certainly seen it on here before and it’s a common defense of displaying the confederate flag. “Heritage” as if it was generations of history

Anytime you put a name on a headstone it means a lot to a few .
We may not all agree with what the Confederacy stood for or that many today believe still in it's cause and considerations ... there are a swath of people across this country who can rightly claim to be the descendants of people who left their homes and families to fight for a cause they believed in ...right or wrong .
If you're gonna play in Texas , ya gotta have a fiddle in the band .

I have 3 direct ancestors who fought for the Confederacy. None of them had slaves. They were poor. They fought because they understood an army was invading and they needed to defend their homes and families. They did not fight to defend the rights of the rich plantation owner to keep his slaves. 155 years later I can honor their bravery and duty while still recognizing slavery was a horrible institution.
By the way one of them died in a union pow prison, one was shot in the shoulder and survived, the third was unharmed. Excuse me while I not label them as evil and racist.

Excellent statement. Most Southerners fought to protect they're homes and family. For those who call them racist..would you have let the Invaders burn your home down?

Re: You know what lasted longer than the Confederacy ?

Most of them had their homes burned down anyway. Their wives, children and farm workers were raped, tortured and killed by the yankees.

the "army was invading" because south carolina fired on fort sumter. then lee took the army of virginia into pennsylvania because gettysburg had a shoe factory and half his infantry was barefoot. there isn't anything romantic about the confederacy. basically, rich crackers with slaves duped poor white rednecks into running off to fight a war that was not to their benefit.

is slightly more significant than "1 for the thumb"

regardless whether you agreed their intent.

It's statements like these that show 2 things:

1) how tone deaf the Left is, and

2) that they have no intention of ever understanding other people's opinions, instead simply overrunning those people.

It's called two-faced.

Born and raised in SC with a family tree that goes back well

Jun 15, 2020, 8:06 AM

before the American Revolution. I've been able to document that my relatives have fought in the French-Indian Wars, American Revolution, Mexican American War, Civil War (Confederate side), World War II, Korea (my dad), Desert Storm (me), OIF (me). Oddly enough, none of my direct relatives were involved in WWI or Vietnam - my ancestral males were too young or too old at the time.

So I see no reason why I should base my "heritage" on the Civil War when me and my ancestors have fought in many more conflicts under the United States of America banner.

Southern heritage didn't start and end with the Civil War era and I frankly get tired of hearing a certain class of southerners who seem to only speak about their "heritage" in regards to the dismal Civil War period. The Confederacy is dead (long may it be dead) so put the Confederacy in the museum and history books where it belongs.

As for me, I'm proud of all my Southern heritage but particularly proud of my American Revolution ancestors as they gave birth to something unparalleled in human history; a Constitutional Republic called the United States of America. I just hope that my generation is not the last to believe this Constitutional Republic is worth keeping.
