Ken's family news

On Monday, Brother-Of, whom some of you know as peetegroove, ran the grand canyon. Left at dawn, down the bright angel trail, to the camp at the bottom by the river (Phantom Ranch), and then back up. About 18.5 miles and 5K feet of climbing.
Originally he had planned to do a Rim-to-Rim-to-Rim, which is from top, down to the bottom, up other side and then all the way back, all in the same day. That route is 40-ish miles and twice the climbing. He and his running partner both got injured in training and missed time, so they ONLY did the down and back route. I expect he'll try the whole thing next year, TBD.
Also on Monday, Son-of started a summer internship at the Zoo. On Tuesday, he got bit by a flamingo, which I find endlessly hilarious.
The end.

Went w my uncle and brother, spent the night at the camp on the bottom and walked back up the next day. I was so jealous of the people on donkeys bc man it sucked walking back up.

I've never known anyone who was bitten by a flamingo and survived.
but I've never known anyone bitten by a flamingo. You should get the yard ornaments.

Isn't it a lottery to run those trails?

Employee wanted to do the rim-rim-rim route but didn't get approval. Was looking at snowshoes and other gear as the early season pass was still snowy on the north side.

This was not an organized event, so AFAIK they did not do a lottery.

They just planned it, rented a cabin at the rim and went for it. I'm sure the park service strongly discourages people from trying this.
They did it in early May with the hopes the snow would be gone at the tops and the pipes unfrozen (so they could fill up waters at the opposite rim). It was in the 20s when they left in the morning and it did snow up top, but not enough to stop them.

This was on the Indian subcontinent, just after the war before it became illegal.
