Academic scholarships offered to out-of-state residents
Jun 1, 2022, 9:06 AM
|
|
Good morning Clemson family. For those of you who have been in a similar situation, I'm looking for information pertaining to what Clemson offers related to academic scholarships for non-South Carolina residents. My wife and I are Clemson grads (class of '97), live in Georgia, and our daughter is a rising high school senior. She has a 4.0 GPA, takes honors & AP courses, top 5% of her class, yearbook editor, and scored a 1460 on the SAT. I'm sure every applicant is treated on an individual basis, but am curious if these credentials are good enough to receive a merit scholarship - perhaps waive out of state tuition? If anyone has a current son/daughter at Clemson with a similar high school academic achievement, and is out of state, I'd love to hear if Clemson offered your child any merit based scholarships. Thanks for any input/advice offered, and Go Tigers!

So, I'll give you an honest answer.
Friend had a daughter in-state, top of her class, great SAT's etc. She got a full ride after the president of another in-state school - C of C called her and offered it to her.
Mom is a prof with tenure at Clemson.
Clemson offered.......
zilch.
Good luck.

Son of hit all those criteria and then some, and I think they threw $15k his way, knocking it down to $40k+ a year.
They stopped doing the in-state tuition as an award a few years ago.

To avoid being surrounded by kids who can't afford $60k/year.
Nashville has some bougie private schools with facilities that make some universities weep, but it tops out about $35-40k/year here.

It's still a rather small pocket of development off of 544...but it's more than it was. I haven't taken 501 in years, but I assume on that side it's much improved as well.

Traveling around the Mid-Atlantic at these sporting events I see tons of Clemson gear, and almost any of them I ask about the connection I get "oh no connection, we just toured there---it's my kid's dream school".

but Bama offered a full ride, which rubbed salt in the wound. Ultimately ended up going to UT in the fall and after their scholly's it's costing me mid-4 figures a year. I'm super happy.
I'd be looking at UGA or Ga Tech if I were you.

and she said Clemson spreads out most of their scholly money these days, it is rare that people are getting full rides (like Greenr did back in his smart days) but you might get a little bit to "help." That is based on in-state info though. I would assume for out of state, you gotta be the next Herbert Einstein or Elon Must in order to get a good scholly package.

scholly (not to be confused with the Duke of Edinburgh), a couple local York County schollys, and BOOM, get a refund every year. My dad would confiscate that refund too. So I would sign up for FULL meal plans and trade that down and blow the difference on beer.
Grad school was free too, but I was young, dumb, and full of stupid decisions so I took out some loans to live more comfortably with my new wife. Her grad school was not free at all.

offer your child an interview for a scholarship.
Also pro tip where ever they go, get in the habit of going by the financial aid office at the beginning of each semester and asking if anyone lost a scholarship or aid that is transferable. Assuming they keep a 3.5 or plus they maybe able to pick up money that others lost due to poor grades etc.

1540 SAT, perfect 4.0/weighted 4.65, all AP classes, 5s on all the tests she took soph/junior year (sure it will be 5s on her senior tests too). She will be an engineering major in the honors college in the fall.
They did away with the out of state tuition thing... but I think she got close to 25K/about half.
Best advice she got from engineering/honors college recruiters was to get her application in as soon as they start accepting them. They let her know she was receiving some merit based scholarships within a few weeks of applying.

He's never had a real job for any length of time; his wife works full time and they had a kid when he was in his 30's and then again when he was like 49/50 or something crazy (his wife is 6 years younger than him), so he's back home again.
He always hated working, and would do anything to avoid it. And he did.

My sister is pretty high up in the admissions office, and I let her know that if any applications come matching the academic criteria below, matching class of 97 parents from Roswell, GA, to please discard them because the parent rudely asks questions on message boards with no intent of reading or replying to them.
I am sorry it came to this, but you forced our hand...we simply had no recourse. We're Clemson, we're better than that.
