Let's talk Casio watches for a sec.

As a child of the 80's, I was accustomed to Casio watches being cool, yet a little nerdy, and costing about $30. I remember thinking I had totally beaten the school system when I got a Casio calculator watch, until I saw that it would take me 12 hours to take a math test if I tried to use it, and I also had one of the first Casio Data Bank watches where I could store up to 50...FIFTY of my closest friends' names and numbers, nevermind that each entry took about 5 minutes. G-shock watches were super rugged and were the slightest of upgrades over the more plebian Timex Triathlon.
So imagine my surprise to discover that here in 2022, G-Shocks are a real cult fad, start at $100, and can be had for $3000 or more. What?

I have a few Casios I've gotten over the years

less than 10 though. I don't go anywhere without a watch on. The engineer in me demands I must be aware of situational "things", time being top of the list. I even keep a spare at work for that rare occasion I have a disjointed morning and leave home without one. I'm not a teenager so I'm not tethered to a cell phone 24/7 (I leave it home or in car too sometimes), so watches serve an important function for me.
I have one $30 beater that I wear on weekends when out chainsawing or doing chores, if it gets smashed I'm OK with. But the rest are pretty nice. Now I wouldn't spend $2K on a GShock, but I do have a couple in the $500 range. I don't quite grasp what a $2K watch can do for you more than a nice $2-300 one, bells and whistles wise. My nicest Casio is probably this PAW Pathfinder. Had it probably 10 years now. Beautiful purple/orange face (yeah, that was the sellpoint). Atomic signal and solar powered, so once it's set, you never have to set it again, ever. No battery changes either. THIS RULES. That's your separator from a $50 to a $150 watch, and worth it. Has a compass, barometer, altimeter, thermometer of course. Nice outdoor watch. I could sell it on Ebay right now for more than I paid for it 10 years ago.
I don't keep up with the collectors' "cult" or what have you, but I know they do have a very hardcore fanboy group out there (I check on new models from time to time). And resale value, as mentioned, is righteous for the right model.
