Why don’t we push for the GOP to re adopt their 1956 platform (since nothing has changed in the Republican Party since Lincoln freed the slaves)
https://www.presidency.ucsb.edu/documents/republican-party-platform-1956
Some highlights I’m sure you whole heartedly support:
expansion of social security vigorously support the United Nations improve the effectiveness of the unemployment insurance system protect more effectively the rights of labor unions safeguard our precious soil and water resources provide asylum for thousands of refugees, expellees and displaced persons fully appreciate the importance of scientific knowledge recognize the need for maintaining isolated wilderness areas Recognizing economic health as an indispensable basis of military strength and world peace, we shall strive to foster abroad and to practice at home, policies to encourage productivity and profitable trade.

"...but only after said person(s) acknowledged that the Republicans freed the slaves."
I always laugh when I see statements like this that show a poor understanding of history. Yeah, sure, I guess you could say they kind of did... but that ignores that Lincoln and many Republicans during that era were the big government progressive types. Passing the Emancipation Proclamation took bipartisan effort, mainly bribing many Democrats. The Dems back then were small government, states rights conservatives. Sound familiar?
Let's put it this way: If you were alive back then, you would have been in the conservative Democrat, states rights, anti-abolition camp. Probably completely on the side of the confederacy.
I'm also always amused at how today's Republican supporters completely ignore the ideological shift of the parties post WW II. You would have been a staunch Southern Democrat back in the 1950s.
But hats off to being so in love with a political party (lol) that it helps you neglect history.

Many of the folks who call themselves Republicans in the post Reagan error would have almost certainly been the same people protesting against integration, equal rights, etc. in the 50’s and 60’s.
The Republican Party with which I used to identify died once Christian Conservatives hijacked it starting during the Reagan era.

Worst poverty I've ever seen in the US is in the Appalachian Mountains, and not a native American or an Indian reservation. Only in America can you get $11,000 a year in casino revenue, and still be in poverty.
Worst poverty I've ever seen is in Guatemala, Haiti, and St. Lucia. In some places in those countries entire families won't make $11,000 in a decade.
Side note - The MEDIAN yearly household income for PLANET EARTH is $10K.
We don't have true poverty in the US. Never have in my lifetime. When you see Americans with large families, with emaciated kids who are starving, ######## in a hole, living in a hut with a dirt floor, thatched roof, no running water, barefoot with no shoes, and no electricity for 50 miles, much less a doctor or grocery store, then you've seen poverty. The most run down trailer parks in SC would be considered upscale in parts of many third world countries.

If they didn't work, our poor and unemployed would be living in thatched huts, with dirt floors, with starving emaciated kids, drinking from a ditch, ######## in a hole, without shoes, clothes, or electricity.
They keep our worst trailer parks a clear notch or two above 3rd world poverty.
They work to keep people alive, not starving to death, and have food and shelter. Beyond that they're useless because plenty of people are just fine with that life. A life in the US on the government teet is better than 3rd world poverty, every single day. Indians included.

It's not about a guilty conscience. The institution of slavery stole wages and thus potential wealth from slaves. Had they been paid a just wage for their labor, they could have developed wealth that would have been passed down generationally. Because of that forced labor, the wealth went into the American economy where it continued to grow and where it remains today.
The point of reparations is to fix that.

To be fair HR40, the bill being talked about
Jun 21, 2019, 9:58 AM
[ in reply to So what, specifically, should be done? Until a plan is put out ] |

is designed to do just what you are saying...to determine things like the dollar amount, who gets it, how, etc.
HR40 is not the bill that would be the reparations. It's a bill to have the issue studied. It sounds, from your posts, like you would be in strong favor of HR40 passing.

miraculously, would not come up with an answer, and we would waste a lot of money. (As sure as I am that I use too many commas)
But IF it was the avenue to an actual proposal, so be it. Let’s do it. I think it will be great because once we all agree on a recipient and a dollar figure, we can move forward. Anyone unsatisfied at that point, I will refer you to the Democrat leadership.
Here’s the closest my quick Google search came to finding a proposal: https://qz.com/1012692/this-is-what-reparations-could-actually-look-like-in-america/
It’s not a proposal, but a framework. I want an actual defined proposal. Still, it includes: A payment (of course) Housing assistance Free higher education Education Monuments, markers, museums, etc A free trip to Africa
Aside from the free trip to Africa (lol, by the way), I’m amused at how much of this already happens to some degree. “Yeah, but...you know...more...stuff”. Yes yes yes. Just tell us all how much.

Just go on the record as being opposed to reparations. Acknowledge the logical lunacy, the flawed morality and the absurd lack of practicality...but then say okay...tell us what you want and we won’t get in the way. Let the Dems have it...whatever they want. Let them own the value they put on slavery and the associated additional burden on tax payers who obviously have nothing to do with slavery.
It will never happen, if course. Dems don’t want reparations. They want to be the party of reparations so they can leverage the issue. But still, I’d like to see it play out.

not actually execute any sort of reparations, but instead cause the issue to be thoroughly studied. I don't see anything wrong with that, personally.
I think they will find, if they so study, that, practically, any significant remedy would be very difficult.
Sometimes, we have opportunity to make up for mistakes. Sometimes, what's done is done, and there's not much that can be done about it except to be the best you can be in the present and in the future.
I don't personally buy into the philosophy of "where my tax money goes". I pay taxes, not to any particular cause, but to the government to use as they see fit. So reparations, in the remote chance that they are enacted, wouldn't be "me paying people". It's the government choosing to spend money on something. "Render unto Caesar that which is Caesar's." Once I render it, it's no longer mine. Now I can certainly, in the ballot box, have an influence over what kinds of things the government spends money on, and how much.

I watched a Season 1 episode of The West Wing just a couple of days ago that dealt with reparations. And then it was in the news for real the next day. So I was, like, prepared through Netflix. Ha.
The basic point in the end, as I remember it, is that having it talked about was at least worth asking the question, even if you don't come up with a good solution today.

good conversation, intelligence, and empathy right off the bat. I would be totally, 100% enthusiastically in favor of all of those things, but there is no way it can happen if reparations are the starting point. I would love to see a real, intelligent, non-political discussion of race relations, focused on causes and real solutions. Unfortunately politics and politically driven news networks drive everything, and poison the narrative with lies and self serving propaganda.

I'm just saying, I don't think anyone wants descendants of slave owners to be directly responsible. If the government were to do this, and they raised taxes to pay for it, then everyone's taxes would be raised, including those getting the reparation payments. Not just descendants of slave owners.

That was my point above about taxes not being "my money"...

The federal government would be paying, to make up for the federal government's approval of slavery. It's not about individual slaveowners or descendants thereof.
Would our taxes have to go up to cover the expenses? Maybe. OK, probably. But once I pay my taxes, that's not my money anymore.
I'll illustrate further. I do not currently have any children. I do not consider myself to be "paying for" other children's education through my taxes. I pay my taxes because that is my duty as a citizen. And the government's duty is to spend money responsibly. They choose to spend a large amount on education.
If you choose to buy illegal drugs using your salary, then the company you work for is not responsible for "paying for" your drugs. They paid you money, because they are under obligation to do so as your employer, and you make a choice what to spend it on.
In a similar way, I am not "paying for" these theoretical reparations with my taxes. I can certainly have an opinion on whether or not the government should spend money on this, and I can express that in opinion in the ballot box.
And I'd like to go on record that I am not for reparations. I'm just trying to get the argument framed better, so that it's not one that is personally offensive.

1. Which individuals are owed reparations? All black people? People who can prove lineage from slavery? Only poor black people? 2. Who owes those individuals reparations? Every American taxpayer? All white people? People who can trace their lineage to slave owners? Portugal? African Kingdoms who captured and sold them off? North African Slave traders who enslaved Eastern Europeans which is where the word "slave" came from? 3. Why does this debate exist? To fix Black America? To create political leverage?
The whole thing is completely arbitrary bullsh*t.
Do you know how I know that the whole thing is political theater? Native f*cking Americans. Skipping them over is obviously unfair. But they have no political value. Think people.

Seems they would lose a bunch of votes too with that extreme plan.

If you can persuade an entire race to vote for your candidate, you can win an election.

that blacks will stay with them and ignore the more radical "socialist" uprising in the party. So establishment dems and socialist dems are pulling all the stops to court black voters.

Democrats know something this stupid will never actually happen, but its easy to dangle in front of the faces of African American voters to win votes. Same thing with socialism and free ####. Its great to offer up every election cycle because they know #### well 1. it wont work 2. it will never be approved.

Until the whole "Republicans freed the slaves"
My man is out here trying to pretend the platform switch didn't actually happen in the 1900's. The absolute most annoying thing woke Republicans nowadays is the fact they do not realize that Republicans prior to the 1900's were modern day Democrats, minus the whole socialism thing.

Abolitionist party in the 1800s? Did they switch that to “Pro-slavery” in the 1900s?
