Sorry, it wasn't a tackle. Vasturia got his hand on the ball

watch the replay
J.B. goes up for the shot at the 1:47 mark in the video here:
http://www.tigernet.com/story/basketball/Final-shots-drop-Irish-avoid-upset-Littlejohn-13524
the last time the ball hits the floor before Rod Hall goes down, the ball is closer to Vasuria than Hall
not a dirty play
not an intentional take-down
a foul? maybe. IMO a reasonable no-call with both of them going for the ball.

100% foul

You're right they were both going for a loose ball. The both got there, but the Tiger was standing on his feet and the defender was leaping into him. It's simply a foul. Not a dirty play at all, but 100% foul.
Not why we lost. Not blaming that at all. But it is a foul.

he went straight for the ball.
when he starts his dive Rod is 3 feet outside the 3-point line and Vasturia comes down right on the line.

He lept to the ball, of course

But when he landed he landed through the legs of a Tiger who has just as much right to that spot as the defender. It's a foul. Again, not dirty, and not why we lost. In fact I'd argue we had a better chance ultimately with it not being called as we got a decent crack at a 3, and aren't known for being good from the line for the tie.
But it is a missed foul. One of the sort that is missed all the time, but a foul none the less.

Ja;; was taken down by the ND guy's hand. That is a FOUL in most leagues. Not the ACC with a UNC/Duke or ND involved.

You can block a shot, but if you make strong body contract is a foul call. Same applies here, don't tell me you've never seen a foul called on a steal lol Plain contact/trip/tackle whatever you wanna call it was made. It wasn't 2 players getting their feet tangled...it was a foul.

No one has said it was a dirty play. But it was a foul. The Tigers had many chances to not let it come down to that play though.

if you stop it just before it moves from 1:49 to 1:50; you'll see that he did not dive "into" Rod
when he dives - straight at the ball - Rod Hall is 3 feet from the 3-point line
Vasturia lands on the line after getting his hand on the ball
a few folks have called it a 'tackle' or a 'chop-block' ala GaTech... they're wrong

The Tiger was there, standing, and gaining possession of the ball when he landed on his legs.
It is, quite simply, a foul.

It's soccer that you can take out the other player if you get to the ball first...not basketball.
It's like knocking a player down after a shot and claiming you touched the ball so it isn't a foul...
don't see any part of your reasoning that makes sense.

and Vasturia was closer when the ball hit the floor - it bounced just inside the arc behind the free throw line with 8.2 seconds left
at 8.1 he's still closer, but the ball is bouncing toward Hall.
their hands hit the ball at the same instant at 7.9
Hall never had possession. he had put both hands on the ball, it's much more likely a foul

So if it's a loose ball then you should be able to push any player out of the way, as long as you're going for the ball right?
It was a foul, and it should have been called.
But there was spotty officiating both ways last night, so it didn't surprise me that they swallowed the whistle.

There is no burden of intent in sports. It doesn't matter why or how he made contact. In fact, the ball could have been bouncing right beside of him. Doesn't matter. You cannot go thru another player. Period. Contact was made. And you even admitted so. That is a foul. End of story.

You need to take half your name away. Tarheeled needs to be your moniker, nowhere do you deserve to add "tiger". You would fit in well with the rest of those cheating,blue-bellied ######## in Chapel Hill. Do you think a foul would have been called if Hall played for uncheat. You know the answer. uncheat would receive the death penalty for all of their academic fraud if the NCAA had any guts. Yes,Dean and Roy were part of the farce. Excuse me,but that is the real way I see it.

typical troll response you are a joke #### off. That was a foul in every since of the word. You are not allowed to dive adn take out a players legs.
This isnt soccer where a tackle is legal as long as you get ball first.

that battle and for a second had control. The ND player's momentum carried him into Hall's legs taking him (Hall) to the floor. It was a bang bang play which was a struggle for this particular crew to deal with (see back court violation called late).

If the ball isn't even in the equation, it's still a foul. The ball position is irrelevant. The fact that the ball is even involved is also irrelevant. Contact was made = foul.

It doesn't matter if you're going for the ball.
Feb 12, 2015, 6:59 AM
|
|
You cannot run through or reach through an opponent at any time, anywhere on the court. The foul rules just don't disappear for a loose ball. This is a frequent and egregious violation often not called by the referees. It's not a legal scrum on the floor. If you lay on an opponent, it's a foul. If you tackle an opponent (with or without the ball), it's a foul. If you reach through an opponent's arms or legs, it's a foul. If your right shoulder hits the opponents ankle and causes him to trip and fall, it's a foul. Also, Vasurius' layup had a phantom foul called on Ajukwa. Connaughton's drive to the basket had a completely bogus foul called on Nnoko who was just standing there, very still with arms down. Nnoko also was called for a foul in the first half for a completely legal and immobile pick. The refereeing left much to be desired. There were multiple plays, not just one, and they clearly changed the outcome of the game. Clemson outplayed Notre Dame most of the game. It's a shame to see this outcome. Now, if we can get someone better than Hall (i.e., a motivated Harrison) to play defense on the opponents best player, we would have a better chance.
