Yesterday as we discussed what Memorial Day

13

May 30, 2023, 10:12 AM

Means, my 9 year old daughter took it to heart. She drew a memorial picture of a family mourning the loss of a loved one and I had read her clovers story. My son, who is 12, and her both cried and realized why I feel the way I do about this country. It was a solemn day, but if it changed their lives to make them appreciate what we have here, then it was worth it. Thanks to all the posters and stories.

I was able to take what effectively amounted to a "Band of Brothers" tour of Europe. The tour included France, Belgium, Luxembourg, and Germany, and covered Normandy, Bastogne (Battle of the Bulge), the Dachau concentration camp, and The Kehlsteinhaus (Hitler's Eagle's Nest) in Berchtesgaden. That trip and Pearl Harbor two years ago, made the significance of Memorial Day much more profound for me.

That sounds amazing, do you have some pics from there that you can share?

No pressure lol just thought if available it would be cool to see them. I went on a trip when I was 11 and visited all the places you mentioned. I must have been a dork because that's what I told my dad I wanted to do for vacation that year lol

That is a bucket list trip for sure. My boys and I watch Band Of Brothers from start to finish each year and a trip like you described is discussed amongst us quite often.

I would highly recommend it...

It was a little pricey but well worth it IMO.

Sounds expensive but one of those things that is worth every penny. I always have taken my kids to the fun places, but also Gettysburg, Washington D.C., World Trade Center, Philadelphia, Ft McHenry, Ft. Sumter and many in between places. Those places may not be as "fun" , but the memories and convictions they form are priceless. Would love to go outside the 48 states.

a few of my buddies and I took a week long excursion as we drove to a Clemson/Maryland game in College Park. The plan was to stop along the way and visit a number of Civil War and other historical sites including Appomattox, Fredericksburg, Spotsylvania, Manassas, Antietam and, of course, Gettysburg (among others).

I didn't mean to make any kids cry

And my 5th grade granddaughter cried yesterday when we told her that we were going to change the pool liner this winter. She hates to lose the same liner that she saw when she learned how to swim. She also said the sample of the new liner my wife picked out is ugly.

Oh they were thankful tears. The best kind. I appreciate in this messed up world, any opportunity to show them what made this country great and the values that made it special
