But to quote the recently departed bard:
"I don't know what we're doing here You don't 'KNOW' what were doing here Now Christians don't walk out on me just yet You know whose name I'm yelling as I'm clutching my chest The one my dad told me to and his told him to And I probably pray as much or more than you do Believe? ####, every word I sing But believing and knowing, those are two different things And if your trying to change the way a strangers life will have to go I believe this is where I wanna stick to what I know"

I used to not believe at all, but now that I am dealing with death it makes me more irrational and makes me want to believe.

well, yeah. That's the whole reason religion exists - people are afraid of death

Funny, I am not afraid of death at all. I just miss some people that have died. I am not religious at all and don't believe in any organized religion. Organized religion and the afterlife are two different things for me though.

As my sister lay dying from breast cancer several years ago, we talked about this. And i asked her about being afraid of dying. She said that we are all dying, I just have a clear idea as to how and when.
I replied to your post because you mentioned "now that I'm dealing with death". We're all dealing with death, either by accepting it or ignoring it.
Maybe the belief in the afterlife provides comfort to those that have that clear idea as to how and when. But I try not to rationalize it. I want to believe in an afterlife. And there is always some doubt that creeps in.
My question would be that if there weren't and afterlife, what's the point of it all?

I can't prove it, and I understand why others don't. But yes, I believe there is more that we don't know or understand than we do.

I struggle with the concept of the afterlife even as a Christian. It seems so wild and crazy at times that I can't even start to wrap my head around it. But I think that's what makes the idea of it so interesting... we don't know.
I was not raised with any religion, I believed in some kind of vague higher power most of my life because it's just what people talked about. But I was pretty agnostic. I became a Christian a decade ago and I try to be very real about my faith--I struggle with it, I have doubts, I have seasons where I yearn for God and seasons where I feel very far from God. But what planted the seed to my faith and my belief in God and the afterlife was this:
I experienced great loss in my life. I lost my dad, 3 grandparents, countless aunts, uncles, cousins, all between the ages of 6 and like 21. I told myself at a pretty young age that I couldn't live in a world where all of those people hat I loved so much just passed away and became dust or carbon molecules or whatever. I forced myself to believe that they were in a "better place." And I still believe that, probably even more as I have become a Christian. But I am at peace with death, even at a relatively young age... because if I'm wrong and it's just darkness and nothingness when I die I won't know any different.

I think Mufasa nailed it in The Lion King…
“When we die our bodies become the grass, and the antelope eat the grass. So we are all connected in the great circle of life.”

"Energy cannot be created or destroyed, it can only be converted from one form into another"
I believe this applies to Life Energy as well as any other form, so for me it's a Yes.
