EDIT to add: I believe weaponizing DSS in a way that greatly undermines the primacy of the parent/child dynamic, as a political stunt no less, is far more harmful to society.

If my child said they identified as a t-rex so I found a doctor to cut their forearms off that would be widely accepted as child abuse, and it would be abuse. A lot of these parents are mentally ill themselves, if they are a danger to their child DSS steps in same as they always have. Same way they would if you were dealing and using meth around your kids and someone alerted them.
I don't really see it as weaponizing social services at all, IMO it's more giving social services guidance on how to handle these issues.

I would never allow it for my child, even if he was convinced he needed it. But, again, that is a decision between parents and doctors. Should there be more stringent legal requirements before procedures can take place? Sure. Should these procedures be outlawed on minors of a certain age? I'm probably in this camp.
But, I consider the parent/child paradigm to be extremely sacrosanct, and what is still a subjective call by parents does not meet my standard for State intervention.
Let's put it this way. As bad as I view gender reassignment on minors, I view the power of the State to remove children from their parents as even worse.

would allow the courts to take temporary custody of a child so that they can get the gender affirming "treatment" they want. You're probably right in that all irreversible medical procedures (puberty blockers, surgery, etc.) should be made illegal for minors.

This is really a failure of the medical system and the spineless of the governing bodies to stand up against progressive populism and balk as an industry at irreversible medical procedures on children who are -- psychologically -- unable to fully appreciate the decision they are making. I think much of what's going on today wouldn't be if the medical community said this is a bad idea and you should not be pushing it.

laugh at people who view the medical community as this all knowing monolithic entity, who can do no wrong. In some cases they aren't much better than your street level drug dealers, doing whatever to make a buck.
When you look at it from a business perspective, it does kind of makes sense they'd go along with this stuff though. Surgically alter a kid with mental problems and you've pretty much got a customer for life, whether it be for their psychological needs or to "fix" what was previously screwed up during prior surgeries. If you specialize in the trans stuff, I imagine it could be quite lucrative.

Well. Insidious is probably the wrong word since putting aside your ethics because you want to be seen as "woke" (or just looking to avoid the fight with some really ruthless people), is pretty insidious. But I think it's more that than profit-motive.
We might even be able to avoid outlawing the medical procedures (which comes with its own slippery slope) if the medical community had stepped up to do its due diligence.
This is basically rhetorical, but I just don't see how the Left can say kids can't smoke or buy guns because they're too underdeveloped to understand what they're doing, but if a 5yo boy says he likes dresses they roll out the red carpet to gender reassignment. I have no problem with the surgeries for adults, and believe there is a medical/psychological justification for them. But not for kids. Absolutely not.
