Just a thought... No $2 Bills in Atlanta this year.
Aug 1, 2022, 5:47 PM
|
|
Since Ga Tech effed Clemson fans over by downsizing the number of seats by 13,000 moving from Grant Field to an upper-deck-roped-off MB Dome (while UGA v Oregon will play in full arena Saturday) due to the fear of being outnumbered in the stands (which would have happened), our fans should hold off on spending ANY $2 bills in the Atlanta area that weekend.
Why?
It will be common knowledge in the business community that there's a Tech / Clemson football game that weekend, and many will be expecting these bills to show up. When they don't, I want them asking why. And the answer will be that Tech chose to limit the number of fans traveling to the area for this game (by roughly 30k), and screwing the local business community over, by cutting the number of seats back, and they should get eaten alive by those same businesses for doing so.
Considering ATL is where the $2 bill tradition started, to show our travel impact, it would be poetic to kibosh it there for that game considering the circumstances. A reverse $2 bill message.
Go Tigers!

Was that Tech's doing or the bowl organizers making the decision not to use the upper deck?

Also, there's this:
Mar 4, 2019 Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta will become the first professional stadium to become cash free. — No cash accepted for tickets, concessions at Atlanta's Mercedes Benz Stadium.

and enjoy the experience.
I hate to break it to you, but the $2 bill thing isn’t anything more than a novelty at this point. Most people don’t use cash much anymore, and the few who do aren’t going to create much of an “economic impact” by using $2 bills stamped with a paw. It was a great idea several generations ago, but it’s not relevant now.

And a special one at that.
But we are fooling ourselves if we think using $2 bills for a road game is going to make the impression it did many decades ago.
We are talking about Atlanta, an international city with tons of tourists visiting every weekend. A few hundred $2 bills scattered throughout the city isn’t going to move the needle.
Besides, you’re undervaluing our reputation as a fan base if you don’t already think Atlanta businesses know we travel well and spend money at their businesses.
I prefer to let our personalities and kindness do the talking, not $2 bills.

to spend ZERO $2 bills in Atlanta this year - nary a one. Merchants expect them when we travel to the ATL. So not traveling with or spending them anywhere would have an impact of "what happened to Clemson fans" for a game weekend, especially considering they 'know how well Clemson people travel and spend money'.
And the answer to that: Your local team cut their seats back by 13,000 to keep us away, so take it up with them. Edit add: They also roped off 29,000 seats in the MB Dome which kept even more of us away.

I got your point about $2 bills
Aug 3, 2022, 12:15 AM

which was predicated on it normally being a big deal for Atlanta businesses to see Clemson $2 bills.
My point is that they won’t really notice. Most people don’t use cash these days, and us not using $2 bills this year isn’t going to cause a collective gasp by Atlanta business owners wondering what happened.
It’s incredible how angry you are about this supposed snub of Clemson fans. Do you really think Mercedes-Benz Stadium decreased seats by nearly 30,000 because they don’t want Clemson fans in them? You do realize that the stadium is hosting this game to make money, right? If they thought they could sell them, they would.
And even if they did want to keep Clemson fans away for some silly reason, why are you wanting to take your frustrations out on Atlanta businesses that have nothing to do with the stadium’s decisions?!?

For starters, it was Georgia Tech's call on the seating, not the venue's call nor the Chick-Fil-A game org.
https://www.ajc.com/sports/georgia-tech/georgia-tech-clemson-in-kickoff-game-sold-out/XCUWCUQTDREZDCNZCF5LJXL4KA/
In case you don't have access, here is what this article states...
"Tech has elected to play the Sept. 5 game with a seating configuration that will cap attendance at 42,500, as it did for its 2021 game against North Carolina in Mercedes-Benz Stadium. It could be considered a reflection of fan interest in the Yellow Jackets in the wake of three consecutive three-win seasons.
While the game is being presented as a Chick-fil-A Kickoff game, it is actually a home game for Tech, which made the game part of its six-year series at the state-of-the-art stadium within walking distance from Tech’s campus. As late as the time of last year’s game, Tech officials planned to use the full 71,000-seat configuration for this year’s Clemson game, expecting larger attendance.
However, Tech finished the season with an average home attendance of 37,333, the lowest (barring 2020, when attendance was capped at 11,000 as a COVID-19 protocol) since 1989, when the stadium capacity was 43,719, as compared to the present 55,000.
In Clemson’s past two visits to Tech, barring the 2020 season, when attendance was capped at 11,000 as a COVID-19 protocol, attendance was 50,595 in 2018 and 53,932 in 2016, both games played with a heavy orange presence in the stands. Both were Tech’s biggest home crowds of the season."
Do you get that? Just in case, maybe you should read it again. Go ahead, I'll wait.
There now.
Next, I never said it was a 'big deal' for Atlanta businesses to see $2 bills. They're used to it by now and expect them (as you said - they know how well we travel and spend). What could have an impact is if they saw ZERO $2 bills with a Clemson game in town. And obviously we're not talking about every single business in Atlanta, or the entire business community that would notice. We're talking restaurants and shops that are prone to catering to visitors and sporting events. Perhaps if you didn't have disdain for the tradition and participated in it you might have grasped that by now. But alas.
Now alastly, at no point was there any kind of suggestion to boycott or avoid Atlanta businesses. Not a one. You made that up (not unusual). Just don't use the $2 bills anywhere. Do you get that? Wanna look at prior posts here in the thread to confirm? The one screwing over Atlanta businesses (and Clemson fans) is Georgia Tech, their home school. They are the ones who opted to eliminate the opportunity for an additional 25,000 people to visit for this game. Go back to the AJC article above (hope Tech's major home newspaper is an okay source for you) for reference on this.
Good night, and good luck.

It makes no sense for you to call for Clemson fans to purposely avoid using $2 bills this year, to somehow make a point that you’re upset that seating capacity for the game was reduced.
Is your expectation that businesses will notice that they didn’t get $2 bills from Clemson fans this year, then complain to Georgia Tech, causing Georgia Tech to have the sads over their decision? LOL.

JK, I rarely post on here and it is even more rare that I comment on somebody's post. Apparently you have never had the joy of spending the $2 bill. It is great for spreading the Tiger brand. It makes great tips and conversation starters. I still use cash as often as I can but I guess Im just a hillbilly from the mountains. Please don't knock the $2 bill tradition until you have tried it. Enough said. Go Tigers!

My point is that using $2 bills in 2022 to show our “economic impact” on a city like Atlanta isn’t going to have the effect it used to.
I’m not knocking the tradition, I just don’t think it has the impact today that it once did.

I’ve been doing this and I believe it keeps the Paw in circulation … I assume most recipients of any $2 bill aren’t likely to spend it since $2 bills aren’t very common …
Adjusted for inflation, $2 is the equivalent of about $9 today…
Who wouldn’t enjoy a wallet full of Clemson bills anyway?

It's still a sign of who we are and where we are when on the road for bowl games or other special events.
At last year's Louisville game, I got into a great conversation with a Cards fan, really enjoyed the interaction and at the end, he excused himself, that he needed to grab something. He came back with a old $2 bill with the paw stamp on it and said he'd gotten it years ago and decided to pass it on to a Tiger fan, which I gratefully accepted. It's now on the visor in my car until the day that I pass it on.

Y’all forget JK is just a basketball fan and they don’t have that tradition. Just another tactic of his to put down the football program.
Went to BC and went in a restaurant and several waitresses came up to me (Clemson hat and shirt on) and they asked about the two dollar bills. Another Clemson fan left them on the table.

While panic and getting the Ga state legislature involved is a bit of a stretch, hopefully this could motivate a few outspoken merchants to bring it up with the Atlanta Sports Council and local tourism board to question why Tech would choose to lessen sports fans traveling to the area and thus negatively impact their businesses, and help take steps to not take this route again in the future.
Go Tigers.
